FAQ

1. Where is the University?
Nicholls State University is located in Thibodaux, Louisiana, in the heart of Cajun country. Thibodaux is only 50 miles southwest of New Orleans and 50 miles southeast of Baton Rouge.

2. How many students attend Nicholls?
There are about 7,000 students enrolled at Nicholls, making it a medium sized university. Students from many states across the U.S. and more than 40 countries make up the student body.

3. What are the Admission requirements?

4. What is an official copy?
An official copy is a copy that is either mailed directly to Nicholls State University, or a faxed copy from the institution or a copy that is hand-carried in a sealed envelope.

5. What if I went to another university?
If you have credits at another institution, whether from work in a dual enrollment program or from work as a college student, you will need to have an official college transcript sent to the Office of Admissions.

Transfer students with less than 12 hours of nondevelopmental credit will be required to submit official ACT scores and high school transcripts if you graduated from an out of state high school or a Louisiana high school prior to 2003.

6. I took the ACT many years ago, do I have to retake it?
No, ACT scores are good for life. Please either request a copy to be sent from ACT, fax a copy from your high school, or bring us the original score report that was sent to you from ACT. When requesting a score report, be prepared to state the month and the year that you took the test.

7. What do I need to make on the ACT to come to Nicholls?
Students must score a minimum of a 16 composite on the ACT and either an 18 in English or 19 in math in order to be considered. While you are being considered, this does not automatically grant admission.

Students who have received a GED must score a minimum of a 23 composite on the ACT in order to be admitted.

8. Do I have to reapply for admission if I sit out a semester?
YES. Any student that sits out a fall or a spring semester is required to reapply for admissionn. If you do not attend for the summer semester, you are not required to reapply.

9. Does Nicholls have an orientation program?
Yes, all first time freshmen and transfers with less than 30 hours are required to attend orientation. We have staff specially dedicated to making orientation an informative, while enjoyable event. Learn more about orientation at the New Student Orientation webpage.

10. How do I get invited to orientation?
You must be admitted to the university.  Letters are mailed to students about one month prior to the start of the Orientation cycle, usually in late February or early March.

12. What ACT scores are needed for placement in English 101 or Math 101?

English 101 – 18 in English

Math 100 – 19 in Math

Math 101 – 20 in Math

Math 100 and Math 101 both count for credit as Math 101. Math 100 is taught as a five hour format, while Math 101 counts for three credit hours.

13. How do I get financial aid?
You must apply early for financial aid by filling out the FAFSA form. This is available over the internet at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The earlier this form is submitted, the earlier your financial aid gets processed. Applying online reduces the processing time by about 2 weeks off.

15. Do I have to pay the application fee?
Yes. The $20 application fee is required in order to have your application processed. Applications received without the application fee will not be processed. No waivers of the fee can be accepted.

16. I applied for one semester and decided not to come.  Do I have to reapply and pay the application fee?
Yes!  Applications are only valid for the term in which you applied.  So if you apply and pay the application fee for one semester, choose not to attend, then you must reapply for the next semester you wish to attend.

17. I printed out ACT scores from the Internet.  Will you accept them?
No!  Scores printed from the Internet cannot be used.  We will accept copies of the scores that are mailed to your home, copies of scores sent to your high school, or scores sent directly to Nicholls via ACT.
