Careers

Cardiovascular technologists perform diagnostic examinations and therapeutic procedures involving the heart and/or blood vessels, under the supervision of a physician. They review relevant patient history and clinical data, perform clinical testing and record data to be interpreted by a physician.

Most technologists work in cardiology departments of hospitals. Job opportunities also exist in offices of cardiologists, medical laboratories and diagnostic imaging centers. In 2006, entry-level salaries ranged from $36,000 to $45,000, according to the American Medical Association.

Examinations and procedures performed by cardiovascular technologists are categorized as follows:

  • Electrophysiology
  • Cardiac ultrasound
  • Invasive cardiovascular monitoring

NOTE: Nicholls cardiovascular technology graduates are to acquire the three credentials that correspond to these areas.

Electrophysiology

Electrophysiology includes conducting electrocardiographs, commonly known as EKGs, which are usually done prior to surgery or during physical examinations of patients with cardiovascular problems. Technicians also perform Holter monitoring (used to identify heart rhythm abnormalities), conduct cardiac stress tests and adjust pacemakers. The professional credential required for this area of cardiovascular technology is the Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist.

Cardiac ultrasound

Cardiac ultrasounds are used to assess the function of the heart chambers, valves and vessels. Ultrasound equipment creates echocardiograms. The professional credential required for this area of cardiovascular technology is the Registered Cardiac Sonographer.

Invasive cardiovascular monitoring

Invasive cardiovascular monitoring involves assisting physicians with cardiac catherterization procedures, used are to determine if a blockage exists. The procedure may involve balloon angioplasty, an alternative treatment to heart surgery. The professional credential required for this area of cardiovascular technology is the Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist.
