Michael Howes had spent most of his career focused on educating the next generation of artists. While it has always been fulfilling, teaching has also been unpredictable, like the time he receive a signed doctor’s excuse that read “no art until further notice.”

Howes began teaching after graduate school, when he returned to his hometown of Baton Rouge and taught in the public schools of East Baton Rouge Parish and later at Southeastern Louisiana University. He joined the Nicholls art faculty in 1977. His sculptures have been shown throughout the United States, Italy and England.

“What I like most about my job is seeing students who worked hard to develop their technical skills and visual acuity continue to produce art that not only sustains, but also celebrates the artists they have become,” Howes says.

In his spare time, Howes enjoys working on his larger drawings and researching ideas and concepts that he uses in his sculptures.
