CONCEPT:
To encourage the development of sculpture and the introduction of a new media. The new media of Sculpey builds on prior uses of Crayola Magic Clay. The idea is to develop a broader use and a better quality clay figure.

The concept of the project is based of the words of Jack C. Rich, found in his book called, The Materials and Methods of Sculpture. He stated, "A knowledge of materials is the foundation upon which real achievement is based. The true sculptor posses for his material a respect that is the result of knowledge and understanding of the substance with which he works, and that is futher enhanced by the pleasure of executing the material with his own hands."

MATERIALS:
5 0z.of Sculpey clay, a pencil, and a sheet of newsprint.

OBJECTIVE:
The students will develop an understanding of how clay can be manipulated into almost any form. The use of media becomes the focal point of the learning experience.

INSTRUCTIONS:
Place the sheet of newsprint on the table.
Take the block of Sculpey clay and pound it until it feels soft and manageable.
Using only your hands create an animal form of your choice.
The pencil should be used to create small details such as eyes, hair, etc.
When finished, the sculpture should then be placed in an oven at 275 degrees for 15 minutes per inch of thickness. If an oven is not available on site, this can be done at the student's home under parental supervision.
After the sculpture has had time to bake and cool the class will critique the end result.

SELF EVALUATION:
Is the craftsmanship of good quality? Is the total work clean and neat? If asked about clay, can I answer with confidence? Did I clean up my work area and place the supplies in their proper place? Did I follow all instructions?
