MODERN SCULPTURE

Students are given notes and slides on How Modern Sculpture is influenced by Ancient Art.

Some of the examples shown:

Stonehenge, Cromlechs and Dolmens in relation to Henry Moore (Recumbent Figure) and Barbara Hepworth (Assembly of Sea Forms).

Columns, Capitols from Parthenon, Pantheon in relation to Isamu Noguchi (The Mississippi - looks like column and capitol) Bachi (Chisel - similar to column).

Constantine's Arch and Calder sculptures (Black Widow).

Standard of Ur - sarcophagus (patterns, rows, registers of objects) and Nevelson (Homage to the World - found object sculpture)

Egyptian Obelisk, Great Pyramids, Hatshepsut, Obelisk Karnak and Newman (broken obelisk and pyramid).

Materials: Cardboard, newspaper, glue, paint

Procedure:
Students are assigned drawings of two-dimensional basic shapes, cone, cylinder, etc. (Students are also shown diagrams of how to construct some basic forms, see below.) Students then draw a sketch of their proposed original sculpture. The sculpture must contain three different shapes and must have a base of either a square, circle or rectangle. A three-dimensional mock-up of the project is then made using paper or card stock. Once this is done and approved the student starts the actual sculpture. The sculpture is made using paper mache techniques. The basic armature is constructed of cardboard. Once the sculpture is complete it is painted. The finish on these sculptures is spatter paint. Three different related colors were used, for example - light blue, midtone blue and dark blue or another grouping might be grey, black and white.
