OBJECTIVES:
The student should be able to:
• Design flip flops by repeating lines, shapes and colors.
TIME: 60 minutes
MATERIALS
Markers
Colors
Flip flop cut out
Tissue paper
INTRODUCTION/PREPARATION/ANTICIPATORY SET:
Ask children “How many of you have a pair of flip flops that maybe have some type of pattern?” Explain that summer is coming and usually we wear flip flops during the summer and today we will read a story and create our very own flip flops using patterns, lines and colors.
ACTIVITY:
Teaching Model: Read the story Patterns and discuss the different patterns we see throughout the story..
Guided Practice: Teacher will model how to create flip flop. Invite students to discuss and describe the different kinds of designs used to create flip flops. Show the children how to create the flip flop using repeating lines, shapes or colors. Explain to children that an alternating pattern is when two or more elements are repeated. Tell the children that they will create a pair of fancy flip flops.
Independent Practice: After passing out materials have the students pencil in alternating patterns on the flip flop cut out. Explain to them that they may want to use lines, shapes, colors or maybe all three. Instruct the students to make sure the pair of flops match. During this time students will create their very own flip flops. After they are finish students will describe the pattern and teacher will attach tissue paper.
Closure: Students will share the flip flops with the class and describe their patterns.
EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT:
Informal: The teacher will observe students throughout the lesson and have them identify the patterns in the flip flop.

TEACHER REFLECTION:
This lesson was so much fun. My students had a wonderful time creating there very own fancy flip flops, but the only problem with the lesson was time. This lesson took a lot longer than I originally planned. Many of the students in the class worked really hard using rulers to create straight lines and some others needed more assistance. I have a class with special education students and these students could have used a flip flop cut out with lines on it to help with the patterns. This would have made it a lot easier for them, but I wanted them to be creative. This was lots of fun and the students were so proud of the final project. The next step is to begin a writing activity having the students write about where there summer shoes will take them.
