PROJECT: GEOMETRY LINES

TEACHER: KELLY CHERRY

SCHOOL: LOCKPORT UPPER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

CONTENT: Math and Art

GRADE LEVELS: 4th

OBJECTIVES:
The Learner will:

Content:
• Identify and interpret properties of polygons and circles: lines, line segments, points, rays, angles. - Math GLE 29 (Knowledge, Comprehension)

• Create a pattern using the properties of polygons and circles: lines, line segments, points, rays, angles – Math GLE 43 (Application)

Visual Arts:
• Use art vocabulary and the elements and principles of design to convey the language of art (create and discuss own artwork) (VA-CE-E3)
• Identify relationships among visual arts, other arts, and disciplines outside the arts (VA-CE-E6)

TIME: (2) 60 minute lessons

MATERIALS
Computer/Television
Power Points
Examples of art using lines
Drawing paper
Colors/ color pencils
Markers
Pencils
Rubric

INTRODUCTION/PREPARATION/ANTICIPATORY SET:
The teacher will play different types of music. The students will be asked to draw pictures/symbols/designs based on the way the music makes them feel. The students’ drawings will be used to lead to a discussion on the use of lines.

ACTIVITY:
Teach/Model: The teacher will use a power point to teach and discuss the types of art lines. She will lead the students into connecting the types of art lines to the geometric lines that are being covered in math. The power point will also contain works of art that the teacher will use to model identifying and interpreting art and geometric lines.

Guided Practice: The students will use magazines to locate pictures using lines. They will identify and interpret the different types of lines used in the pictures.

Independent Practice: The students will create a picture using the different types of lines.

Closure: The students will view pieces of art on computer/TV and discuss the different lines.

Day 2
The teacher will call certain students to the front of the class in a deliberate pattern. The students will be led into discovering the purpose of the placing of the students.

Teach/Model: The students will be shown several patterns on a power point. The teacher will model finding and extending each pattern.

Guided Practice: The teacher will show the students several pieces of artwork. The teacher and students will find the patterns in each piece. The students will draw an extension of each pattern in their notebook. The teacher and students will create a pattern on the board using lines.

Independent Practice: The students will create a pattern using lines.

Closure: The students will discuss the patterns they used in their independent practice.

EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT:
The students will be evaluated throughout the lesson for understanding of the relationship between geometric and art lines. The final product will be assessed using a rubric.

ART CONTENT/CONCEPTS:
(VA-CE-E3) Use art vocabulary and the elements and principles of design to convey the language of art (create and discuss own artwork)
(VA-CE-E6) Identify relationships among visual arts, other arts, and disciplines outside the arts

COMPREHENSIVE CURRICULUM, GRADE LEVEL EXPECTATIONS AND STANDARDS/BENCHMARKS:
Math GLE 29 Identify and interpret properties of polygons and circles: lines, line segments, points, rays, angles
Math (GLE 38) Solve problems involving simple deductive reasoning.
Math (GLE 43) Identify missing elements in a number pattern.

MODIFICATIONS | ACCOMODATIONS:
Students with learning disabilities will be given a study guide reminding them of the types of lines to be used in their pictures and patterns. Peer assistance will be used as needed.

TEACHER'S REFLECTION:
The students enjoyed the art part of this lesson. They were excited to be able to draw and color during math class. They did not view this as a learning activity, although we were constantly reinforcing the geometric and art lines throughout the lesson. They seemed to enjoy viewing and discussing the different pieces of art that were viewed during the lesson. This was a fun lesson for me to teach. It was a new approach to teaching geometry that really seemed to work.
