PROJECT: LIFE CYCLE OF A FROG

TEACHER: AMY DEMPSTER

SCHOOL: BAYOU BOEUF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

CONTENT: Social Living | Visual Arts

GRADE LEVELS: Kindergarten

OBJECTIVES:
The Learner will:

• Identify and sequence the stages in the life cycle of a frog.  GLE 28:  Observe life cycles and describe changes. (LS-E-B1)

TIME: 40 minutes

MATERIALS
CD/tape player
computer
pictures and worksheets of an egg, tadpole, and frog
frog books
a variety of different textured materials (ex.  Felt, cotton, different textured fabrics and papers, etc.)
glue and popsicle sticks.

INTRODUCTION/PREPARATION/ANTICIPATORY SET:
The teacher and students will sing “Five Green Speckled Frogs”.  The teacher will then introduce the lesson of frogs by asking the students what they know about frogs.

ACTIVITY:
Teach/Model: The teacher will briefly discuss the life cycle of humans.  Then she will discuss the life cycle of frogs.  A short video will be shown on the life cycle of a frog.  A review discussion will follow.  Pictures of each stage will be shown and put in order.

Guided Practice::  The teacher will show and discuss the different textures of materials that can be used for a “Texture Mosiac”  art project. Patterns of the three stages (egg, tadpole, and frog) will be given to the students and they are to fill each one in with different textures.  They will spread glue onto the pattern first with a popsicle stick (spreader) and choose any material on their table.  A timer will be set for this project (20 minutes).  Anyone who doesn’t finish can complete it later in the day at center time.

Independent Practice:   The students will place their mosaic pictures in order on a numbered paper plate (1-2-3) and when it dries, the teacher will staple them and the students can draw arrows.

Closure: The teacher will ask the students what are the stages in the life cycle of a frog.  The students will then act out each stage:  eggs (curl up close together), tadpoles (wiggle around), and frogs (hop around).   To settle down the hopping frogs, “Five Green Speckled Frogs” will be sung again.

EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT:
The teacher will assess the students’ understanding by checking if they put their pictures in the correct sequence.  Their art work will be displayed in the main hall.

ART CONTENT/CONCEPTS:
#1-  Understanding and applying media, techniques, and processes.
#5-  Reflecting upon and assessing the characteristics and merits of their work and the work of others.

COMPREHENSIVE CURRICULUM, GRADE LEVEL EXPECTATIONS AND STANDARDS/BENCHMARKS:
See Objectives

MODIFICATIONS | ACCOMODATIONS:
The teacher will assist any student with help during guided practice.  Students who finish early can pick a frog book and read it on the carpet.

TEACHER'S REFLECTION:
I would do this lesson again.  My students were interested and involved.  Next time, however, I will have them color each pattern before gluing all the pieces on.  This makes a better show when completed.  I also would need to allow for about 15 extra minutes for everyone to finish their artwork.
