PROJECT: IMPROVISATION SUR UN BANC DE PARC (ON A PARK BENCH)

TEACHER: NATHALIE DESROSIERS

SCHOOL: BAYOU BOEUF ELEMENTARY

CONTENT: French Vocabulary and Theatre

GRADE LEVELS: 4th and 5th

OBJECTIVES:
The learner will mime French action verbs

TIME: Two class periods: one to introduce French action verbs (definition and pronunciation); and the second for the lesson below.

MATERIALS:

  1. Verb Flashcards
  2. Park Bench

INTRODUCTION/PREPARATION/ANTICIPATORY SET:
In Québec, we play a game called “improvisation”. There are two teams. The referee reads a little card on which is written a title, how many persons needed to do the sketch, how much time is allowed and the style given to the little play. Teams have 30 seconds to think about what they will do, then… the show must go on. Let’s do a little exercise…

ACTIVITY:
Lesson Presentation
Teacher explains this: when you go in a park, you can often see people seated on a bench. These people usually don’t care about what is going on elsewhere. They have their lives are going on.

Guided Practice: Learners line up in 2 lines facing the couch/bench, but at a certain distance back. The teacher gives flashcards to the first two learners in each line, and they go and sit on the couch and begin to mime the action verb on their card while saying the French word out loud. The next student in each line has to guess the action verb being mimicked by his/her team-mate. When the action verb is correctly identified, that student receives a flashcard and takes his/her turn on the couch. All is done with minimum directions from teacher.
Independent Practice: Allow students to create movement related to verbs of their choice.

Review: On-going throughout day with different games or exercises.

EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT:

Teacher observation of accuracy in language and movements.

TEACHER'S REFLECTION:

It is good if the class has an odd number of learners because couples are forced to change partners with each new round of turns. If the teacher wants learners to mime more than one action verb, either shuffle the cards between rounds or have at least one flashcard more than the number of students so students don’t repeat themselves. Learners did really appreciate this little exercise. It is interesting to see kids moving without props, because they really need to use their imaginations both to do the action and to guess the action.
