TIME: Seven 30-45 minute periods MATERIALS:
INTRODUCTION/PREPARATION/ANTICIPATORY SET:
ACTIVITY: Each day, the teacher will first model the guidelines of the poem the students will be writing. The students will then write a class poem with the teacher. Students will use a rubric to write their own poems following the model. Students will meet with the teacher to edit their rough draft, then will complete their rewrite. The students will use their rough copy to decide how they want to illustrate their poem. They will use warm and cool colors, lines, and shapes to illustrate their creation. The art terms have been slowly introduced throughout other lessons. The teacher will review these terms with the class before the students illustrate their poetry. The students’ poetry will also be entered into the English fair. EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT: The student's final poetry will be graded. Each poem will be assessed
with a rubric that focuses on the guidelines in writing the poem and
the use of the art terms presented as part of the lesson. ART CONTENT/CONCEPTS: GRADE

TEACHER'S REFLECTION: The lesson on illustrating poetry was successful, but stressful. The concepts of warm and cool colors, lines, shapes, and texture had been introduced to the students throughout the year, so it was only necessary to review these concepts for this lesson. My students did some really wonderful and creative illustrations to promote their poems. Most students were very excited to do their best work, though there were a few who did not like to draw and/or were difficult to engage. The lesson is very time consuming, but I really enjoy doing it. I will continue to use this lesson plan in the future, but I will stretch it over a longer time.
