TIME: one
50-minute Class period
INTRODUCTION/PREPARATION/ANTICIPATORY SET:
The teacher asks the students what they had for dinner last night. The
teacher then asks the students what an animal in the wild might eat.
The teacher explains to students that we will be learning about FOOD
CHAINS.
ACTIVITY:
The teacher explains that people are a
part of a FOOD CHAIN. A food chain is the order in which animals eat
plants and other animals. The teacher will explain that plants get energy
from the sun. (Use visuals) Along comes an insect and eats off of the
plant. The plant is food for an insect. Next, along comes a frog and
eats the insect. The insect is food for a frog. This is a simple food
chain. The teacher uses several examples showing visuals of each and
explaining the chain. The teacher reads a book or story about FOOD CHAINS
to illustrate the idea.
Together the teacher and students examine an assortment of pictures showing
simple food chains and discuss the order of each chain.
Children are grouped in threes and each group is given an envelope with
three animals that make up a food chain. Groups are asked to discuss
their animals and decide the order of the food chain. Groups are then
asked to create movements that represent each animal in their food chain,
then act out the sequence of the food chain. Each student (3 per group)
will be one of the parts of their food chain. They will act out their
part. Performances will be in front of the class and the students of
other groups will guess the parts of the food chain being performed..
.
EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT:
The teacher uses a simple rubric to assess the groups according to subject
