Academic Eligibility Requirements
Student athletes whose initial collegiate year of enrollment was on or after the 2003-2004 academic year must adhere to following new NCAA Division I academic eligibility requirements.
Initial Eligibility
Beginning in 2005, all prospective student athletes must be certified under the 14 core-course standard. Partial-qualifier certification will be eliminated for the prospective student athlete who enters August 2005 and thereafter. A non-qualifier will continue to have the opportunity to earn a fourth season of eligibility if he or she obtains 80 percent degree completion by the beginning of his or her fifth year of collegiate enrollment.
Continuing Eligibility
Continuing eligibility requires all student athletes to successfully complete 24 semester credits, 18 of which must be earned during the regular academic year (fall, spring intersession and spring); earn 6 hours per semester (fall, spring); and remain in good academic standing with the university.
In addition, student athletes enrolled on or after August 1, 2003, must meet the following requirements:
Entering second year (third semester) of enrollment:
- Maximum of six remedial hours may be counted toward the rules above.
- 1.80 GPA **
Entering third year (fifth semester) of enrollment:
- Declared four-year degree program. 40 percent of degree requirements earned.
- 1.90 GPA **
Entering fourth year (seventh semester) of enrollment:
- Declared four-year degree program. 60 percent of degree requirements earned.
- 2.00 GPA **
Entering fifth year (ninth semester) of enrollment:
- Declared four-year degree program. 80 percent of degree requirements earned.
- 2.00 GPA **
**Six hours per semester will be certified on a term-by-term basis for ALL student athletes (regardless of year of initial collegiate enrollment) beginning Spring 2004 based on Fall 2003 grades.
These benchmarks are the minimum requirements need to retain eligibility; however, Nicholls State University is dedicated to exceeding all academic requirements.
