Students must apply to the athletic training program at the completion of the pre-professional phase, Freshman Year. Due to the limited number of faculty positions and clinical slots, a maximum of 16 students are selected for admission into the professional phase of the program, which starts with ATTR 220 – Acute Care in Sport and Exercise.
To ensure that interested students are provided the opportunity to compete for the clinical positions, a selection committee uses an objective rating scale to evaluate applications. Criteria such as cumulative grade point average, grade point average earned in all pre-professional courses, work ethic, appearance, enthusiasm, initiative, attitude, punctuality, etc. are included in the scale.
Application requirements:
- Applications must be submitted no later than April 1st of the student’s first year at Nicholls.
- Students must have an overall grade point average of 2.5 with no grade below “C” in any athletic training related coursework.
- Students must have completed ATTR 101 and 102 with a minimum of 80 hours of approved observation clinical hours.
- Students must read and understand the Technical and Performance Standards for the entry-level athletic trainer.
Students must submit:
- Letter of interest explaining why you have chosen a career in Athletic Training. Indicate your goals and professional expectations. This letter should be typed and professional.
- Application for Professional Phase (DOC),
- Transcripts from ALL colleges you have attended.
- Three letters of recommendation (include with application in sealed envelope OR mail directly)
- Instructor (highlighting classroom performance)
- Character Reference
- Previous supervisor (ATC, coach, employer)
- Completed Technical Standards Signature Page. The inability to meet the technical standards requires further consultation with the program director to evaluate your personal situation. Student disability is not a factor in the evaluation of applications
- Any documentation that may be required regarding your criminal or academic background (If applicable)
- Any documentation of hours from previous collegiate athletic training experiences outside of Nicholls State University (If applicable)
Meeting the requirements for admission does not guarantee entry into the program. Students not admitted into the program or those who after admission are dismissed after a probationary period due to failure of meeting expectations, may reapply the following year. During this interim, students not admitted or dismissed from the program will not be allowed to actively engage as Nicholls athletic training students.
