Curriculum

The Nicholls athletic training science program provides students with knowledge and hands-on experience in treating health care problems faced by physically active individuals.

The four-year curriculum is composed of two phases.

Pre-professional phase
The pre-professional phase includes general education requirements and two introductory athletic training courses that familiarize students with the sports medicine profession (ATSC 101 - Careers in Sports Medicine) as well as the responsibilities of a certified athletic trainer (ATSC 102 - Clinical Introduction to Athletic Training).

After completion of the initial phase, students apply for admittance to the professional (clinical) phase (no later than April 1st after the student’s first year).

Professional phase
The professional (clinical) phase offers students the opportunity to qualify for CPR, First Aid and Automated External Defibrillator certifications. Additional introductory courses also emphasize assessment of acute injuries and illnesses, the musculoskeletal system, taping and wrapping techniques, nutrition and lower body injuries. Students accumulate 300 hours of clinical experience during their sophomore year.

The professional phase includes advanced courses and 960 hours of clinical experiences. These advanced courses instruct students in ways to evaluate injuries, properly care for athletes, become familiar with therapeutic exercise and rehabilitation program techniques and learn the administrative issues concerning the operation of an athletic training facility, just to name a few. Students gain off-campus clinical experiences at local high schools, physical therapy clinics and various physician’s offices.
