Minimum wages – the voters have spoken

For some reason, my table doesn’t display unless you click on the title of the post above. If you do, it will display nicely.

There were six states with initiatives on the ballot proposing increaes in minimum wages. All six passed. A “Yes” vote is in favor of raising the minimum wage.

The column marked “Adjustment” indicates that future minimum wages are automatically indexed to inflation (usually annually).

The Nevada amendment is interesting. It reads:

Proposed amendment to Nevada Constitution would require employers to pay at least $6.15 per hour worked if the employer does not provide health benefits. The employer could still pay the federal minimum wage of $5.15 if health benefits are provided. Rates would be adjusted by the amount of increase in the federal minimum wage over $5.15 per hour, or, if greater, by the cumulative increase in the cost of living measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), with no CPI adjustment for any one-year period greater than 3%.

Through your lectures about price cellings and floors, I understand rasing the minimum wage can hurt some groups, but I think this is a good attempt by the nevada goverment to have incentives for its locally owned business to provide health insurance for it’s minimum waged employies.

If the government raise minimum wages, it may improve some people economy. The rich will get richer or poor will get poorer (visa versa). This plan will help local business or state business to grow. Minimum wages workers may have a opportunity to receive benefits like large corporations workers( workers with college degrees).Neveda is seek change , so should other states.

Minimum wage is not benefical to everyone. I could understand why Nevada would help those willing to stay in the minimum wage bracket but how would someone with a fairly large family survive on $5.15/hour? Well at least they have benefits right!!!

  4. Allegra Butler Says:

In order to recieve benefits you must work 40hrs a week. Are the part time workers offered benefits too, or just the raise in minimum wage? This may seem like a good idea for big businesses, but what will this do for small business who cannot provide both higher wages and/or benefits? Also, what would be the minimum standards? This in my opinion is not thought out enough.

I believe that raising minimum wage is a good idea for Nevada. I often here people say if you raise minimum wage that will just make everything else go up for example, food, clothes, gas, and the cost of living. Over the past few years I have notice things slowly going up in prices, but pay for employees would not go up. I believe that a lot of people are afraid of change, but raising minimum wage is a change that needs to be done because having a minimum wage of $5.15 is just not cutting it any longer. In my opinion, a lot of businesses can afford to pay their employees more than $5.15.

I personally think that the minimum wage needs to be raised. People in this country that have low incomes find it hard to sometimes put food on the table. Others who recieve low salarys struggle to break even. The minmimum wage debated also goes hand and hand with the welfare system. I view the situation as this if a person finds it hard to live life making the minimum he or she should recieve goverment assistance, but if a person just collects without working to help better himself/herself why should our tax money be spent on someone who contributes nothing to society

Minimum wage is a joke. It is so far behind the cost of living, it would take an increase of dollars in a short period of time which the government will not do to even things out. The government does not want to even things out because you supposedly need that one word “credit.” They want you to bury yourself in debt then buy your way back out to claim you have good credit. You need credit for this or for that. The system is based so that a minimal amount of people can be ahead. While credit is needed for some things, its a bit overboard now. Minimum wage is strictly for employers to say they are abiding by laws that say someone has to be paid x amount of dollars per hour.

I totally agree with the above statements made by one andrew vicknair. Over the summer term break my family and I visited the great Northeast. While we were perusing around the little town we called home for a week I picked up a local paper. Front page news, read all about it, minimum wage will be increased to 8.25. Resonably registered the cost of living in the Northeast is substantially higher than in the South. But, this is not the point I am attempting to make. The point is even with a minimum wage of 8.25 people of the local community are still not able to make ends meet. This was very obvious by the way of life a few of the “locals” were living. When asked how they afford to live in such a great part of the country while earning MW their response was “credit”. It is ashame that folks are forced to leave the place they call home for the mere reason MW is so far behind society.
Recently I viewd a program on the tube which layed out the increases of MW versus the raises members of congress had voted for themselves. The resulting increases of the congressmen were flat out sickening. In a country of checks and balances with every branch of gov known to man are congressmen and women allowed to VOTE THEMSELVES A RAISE. Just does’nt seem fair does it?
