The Dugout Pirogue
The dugout pirogue is the oldest type of small bout in French Louisiana. It is a direct descendant of the Indian dugouts. The boat is made from a single large Cypress log cut in half lengthwise. Hand tools such as a hatchet, foot adze, hand adze, draw knife, and planes are some of the tools in its construction. These boats are very versatile. They can be propelled with a paddle are a push pole. Its main uses are hunting, fishing, and trapping. They range from 14 - 17 feet.
