The Oyster Lugger

Predecessor for Today's Day Oyster Lugger

The Oyster Lugger

Used by the early oystermen, this rather massive looking boat had lots of open deck space for oyster storage with plenty of room for walking along the sides and stern to operate the hand tongs for harvesting. In 1997 an oyster lugger was constructed by area boat builder, Rodney Cheramie, and is on display at Laurel Valley. Oysters are now harvested year around by motorized oyster luggers with dredges. Present day oyster harvesting boat uses motorized dredges off the side of the boat instead of old time hand rakes (tongs). The deck of this boat serves as a platform for seeding oyster beds.
