MISSION

The mission of Junior Division is to introduce students to the University through comprehensive personal development services including curricular offerings and programs that prepare students to enter senior academic colleges or choose alternative postsecondary educational experiences or careers.

GENERAL INFORMATION

ADMISSION TO JUNIOR DIVISION

Students whose credentials do not meet the criteria for admission to an academic college are admitted to Junior Division according to the following criteria.

  1. First time freshmen needing one or more developmental courses regardless of their ACT composite. 

  2. Transfer students whose transcripts indicate the need for completion of developmental courses.

  3. Transfer freshmen with incomplete credentials (ACT/HS Transcripts) are assigned to Junior Studies in Junior Division for one semester.  Registration for the subsequent intersession, summer session, or semester is not permitted unless credentials have been filed in the Office of Records and Registration prior to registration.

  4. GED and Home School students needing one or more developmental courses.

  5. Non-traditional students having no ACT score or whose high school transcripts do not meet the minimum GPA/high school rank requirements.

REQUIRED FRESHMAN STUDIES COURSES*

The University requires all students to complete one of the Freshman Studies courses listed below based on ACT/placement scores.  This course should be scheduled in their first semester or no later than their second semester.

     FRST 101 ? For students with developmental course placement or by permission of the Dean of Junior Division
     FRST 103 ? Students in General Studies or those undecided about a major
     FRST 106 ? Students with no developmental courses
     FRST 110 ? Adult Learners (25 years or above)
 
    ACSU 115 ? Students admitted to the Academic Success Program

*NOTE: Students who do not complete one of the above courses by their second semester will have a hold placed on their registration and must report to Junior Division, Office of the Dean, to remove the hold.

JUNIOR DIVISION EXIT CRITERIA

Students will receive an official notice of exit from Junior Division upon meeting the requirements detailed below:

Those who meet entrance requirements for a baccalaureate degree.

  1. C or better in all required Developmental English and Developmental Mathematics courses.

  2. Completion of a Developmental Reading course if required.

Those who did not meet entrance requirements for a baccalaureate degree.

  1. C or better in all required Developmental English and Developmental Mathematics courses.

  2. Completion of a Developmental Reading course if required.

  3. Completion of 24 hours of non-developmental courses (100 level or above) with a 2.0 cumulative GPA in the 100 level courses.

   
ADVISING SERVICES

Students in Junior Division are assigned Junior Division academic advisors or Academic Success advisors.  Students must see their assigned advisor for scheduling, change of major, dropping courses, resigning from the University, and other administrative procedures.

Requirements for Students Enrolled in Developmental Courses

Students placing in developmental courses should schedule them immediately upon enrolling and continue to schedule them sequentially each semester to completion.

   
Junior Division Attendance Policy
Requirements, Procedure, Notifications

Student Obligations

  1. Students must attend regularly/punctually all classes in which they are enrolled.
  2. Students must adhere to the attendance/punctuality requirements specified in course syllabi distributed the first week of class.
  3. ABSENCES: Immediately upon returning to class, a student must submit a written signed request for excuse of an absence(s) documenting the reason(s) for the absence.  Only documented, signed requests will be considered, e.g. illness verified by a physician.  Authorization for absences is solely at the discretion of the instructor.
  4. TARDINESS: Tardiness is treated as an unexcused absence unless satisfactory explanation is made immediately after class to the instructor.
    Habitual/excessive tardiness is not permitted and penalties specified in the syllabus are in effect.
  5. It is the responsibility of the student to make-up allowable missed coursework as specified in the course syllabus for an excused absence.  NOTE: Students are hereby notified that some course work as specified in the syllabus cannot be made up.
  6. Specific Attendance Policy for Students Enrolled in Developmental English, Mathematics, Reading and for Students Enrolled in English 100 level courses, History 101, Mathematics 101, all Freshman Studies courses, and Academic Success 115.

*   By the end of the 14th class day all students enrolled in the courses listed above will have signed and each instructor will have on file a Notification of Attendance Form.

   
Penalties for Violation of the Attendance/Punctuality Requirements and Notifications

  1. Students shall receive notification by the instructor upon return to class that they have been placed on Attendance Probation when they have accrued the maximum number of unexcused absences/tardiness.  Upon accruing the next unexcused absence, the instructor will indicate the absence date, sign the form, attach a signed drop slip, and submit the documents to the Office of the Dean of Junior Division.

  2. The Dean of Junior Division will receive and process an Administrative Drop form and notify the student that he/she has been dropped from the class with an F for excessive unexcused absences.

  3. Students dropped from all registered classes with F for excessive unexcused absences will be immediately resigned from the University, placed on academic suspension, will not be eligible to re-enter the University for one semester, and upon re-entry will be placed on academic probation.  Academic Probation students must end the semester with a 2.000 semester GPA or they will be suspended from the University.

  4. Students administratively resigned with F?s for excessive absences during the Spring Semester  will not be eligible to attend Nicholls until the following Spring Semester.

  5. Students administratively dropped from one or more courses with an F for excessive absences are hereby notified that such action may result in loss of financial aid (TOPS, Pells, loans, scholarship, etc.) and that such students must consult with the Financial Aid Office concerning the exact repercussions on the status of their financial aid and the procedure for reinstatement.

  6. Students administratively resigned and suspended during the semester with F?s for excessive absences are hereby notified that such an action will result in the loss of their financial aid and that students must consult with the Office of Financial Aid to determine the extent of the repercussions on their financial aid and the procedure to follow for reinstatement.

  7. Students residing in Residence Halls and in University Apartments are hereby notified that administrative resignation/suspension during the semester with F?s for excessive absences requires that they meet with the Dean of Student Life to determine the extent of the repercussions on their residential status.

  8. This specific attendance policy for Junior Division supersedes the more general University regulations as stated elsewhere for dropping a course and for the final date for automatic W stated in the University Calendar.
