Mathematics Program

The university awards the Bachelor of Science degree with a major in mathematics to the student who completes the curriculum listed below. The curriculum provides a sufficient number of electives to enable the student to concentrate his or her studies in pure mathematics or applied mathematics.

Mathematics Minor

The minor in mathematics consists of a minimum of nine semester hours of credit in courses numbered above MATH 265 approved by the head of the Mathematics Department .

Computer Science Program

The university awards the degree of Bachelor of Science with a major in computer science to the student who satisfies these requirements:

  • Completion of the computer science curriculum.
  • Completion of the requirements for a minor as recommended by the minor department.
  • Grade of C or better in each required computer science and mathematics course.
  • The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degree program at Nicholls is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC) of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (CAC/ABET).

Computer Science Minor

A minor consists of CMPS 130, 135, 220, 221, 222, 350, and 6 additional hours to be selected from any 300- or 400 level computer science course that counts for credit toward the major in computer science. A grade of C or better is required in each computer science course.

* MATH 165 is the entry-level course for this major. All prerequisites for MATH 165 must be met. No degree credit will be awarded for mathematics courses numbered below 165.
** Students must take 12 hours of Natural Science courses, completing an eight-hour sequence plus an additional 4 hours in an area other than that of the sequence. Students may select from Option 1 or Option 2 with Biology 155 being a required course: Option 1: Biology 155 (4 hours) and an eight-hour sequence in either Chemistry (105, 106, and 110) or Physics (201, 203, 202, 204); Option 2: An eight-hour Biology sequence (155 and 156) and four additional hours taken from Chemistry (105, 106, 110) or Physics (201, 203, 202, 204) or Geology (101, 102).
*** Computer Science electives to be selected from CMPS 410, 412, 415, 416, 417, 418, 420, 421, 450, 490 with no more than one course from 450, 490.
