Family and Consumer Sciences Program

The university awards the Bachelor of Science degree in General Family and Consumer Sciences upon the successful completion of the selected curriculum and the requirements of the university and the College of Education. A minimum grade of C is required in all Family and Consumer Sciences courses.

The General Family and Consumer Sciences curriculum offers a concentration in three areas: Birth to Five/Early Interventionist Education, Child, Family and Social Service and Vocational Family and Consumer Sciences Education. The core of general education and family and consumer sciences courses is combined with specific field experiences to provide competency in three professional areas.

The graduate of the Birth to Five/Early Interventionist Education curriculum, after passing the PRAXIS examination, is eligible for Louisiana teacher certifications in Preschool and Kindergarten and as an Early Interventionist Specialist. Candidates for student teaching must meet student teaching requirements as stated in the College of Education section.

The Child, Family and Social Service curriculum prepares graduates for employment in community institutions and/or agencies working with children and families.

The graduate of the Vocational Family and Consumer Sciences Education curriculum, after passing the PRAXIS examination, is eligible for Louisiana teacher certification in Vocational Family and Consumer Sciences. Candidates for student teaching must meet student teaching requirements as stated in the College of Education section.

Core Courses

All baccalaureate degree majors are required to complete the following core courses: FACS 130, 334, 344, 446, and 459.

Family and Consumer Sciences Minor

The department offers a minor in Family and Consumer Sciences and two interdisciplinary minors. Nineteen hours of coursework with a minimum grade of C in each course is required for a minor. Minors available and course requirements are as follows:

  • ADDICTIVE BEHAVIORS: FACS 448, 461, 464, 471, NURS 307, and SOCI 387. Non-majors who elect to complete this minor must complete FACS 131, 334, and 348 which are prerequisite courses. These courses meet the coursework requirements of the state for certification as a Substance Abuse Counselor.
  • FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES: FACS 130, 334, 344, and 446. Three additional three-hour courses must be selected from FACS courses numbered 300 or above.
  • GERONTOLOGY: FACS 431, 464, 470, H&PE 492, NURS 315 or SOCI 372 (Aging and Society) and NURS 352. Non-majors who elect to complete this minor must complete FACS 131, 231, and 334, which are prerequisite courses.

  • Achieve passing score for PRAXIS Elementary Education Content Knowledge Exam (#0014)
  • Achieve passing score for PRAXIS Early Childhood Education (#0020)

OR

  • Accumulate 12 credit hours of combined Nursery School and Kindergarten coursework, selected from: FACS 133, 135, 231, 330, 332, 333, 335, 336, 433, 435.
  • Accumulate 9 semester hours of reading coursework by completing EDUC 365 and 402.

Associate of Science Degree in Child Development and Preschool Management

The university awards the Associate of Science Degree in Child Development and Preschool Management upon the successful completion by the student of the two-year curriculum and the requirements of the university and the College of Education. The Associate of Science program is offered for students who wish to teach or manage private or Head Start preschools. The program is designed to familiarize a student with preschool operations and at the same time accrue college credit applicable to a baccalaureate degree in General Family and Consumer Sciences - Birth to Five/Early Interventionist Education.
