EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES PARAMEDIC (EMSP 51.0904)

Placement in EMSP 101, 102, and 103 requires completion of all required coursework and permission of the instructor. Students must complete the following courses prior to admission: BIOL 114 115, ENGL 101, MATH 101, UNIV or ASCU, and PSYC 101.

EMSP 101. Basic Emergency Medical Care Fundamentals. 3-3-0. Prerequisites: Completion of all required coursework and permission of instructor. Introduction to the role and scope of practice of the EMT Basic. Course content follows the national standard curriculum as outlined by the Department of Transportation. Emphasis is on basic life support, assessment, care, techniques and skills in treating the traumatized and acutely ill patient. The use of medical anti-shock trousers, splints, CPR, patient mobilization, extrication and radio communication is presented. Sp only. (51.0904)

EMSP 102. Emergency Medical Care Laboratory. 1-0-3. Co-requisites: Credit or Registration in EMSP 101, 103. A skills laboratory to accompany EMSP 101. Sp only. (51.0904)

EMSP 103. Emergency Medical Care Practicum I. 3-2-5. Co-requisites: Credit or Registration in EMSP 101, 102. Clinical application of basic skills applied in the hospital setting along with field experiences provided by an approved EMS affiliate. Sp only. (51.0904)

EMSP 200. Introduction to Advanced Emergency Medical Services. 3-3-0. Prerequisites: Completion of a National Registered EMT Basic Examination and permission of director. (Students may be provisionally admitted pending board examination results.) Historical review of the EMS profession, education standards and levels of services provided. Emphasis on medicolegal issues specific to paramedic. Stress management among care givers, patients, and bystanders. Su only. (51.0904)

EMSP 202. Introduction to Paramedic Skills. 3-2-3. Prerequisites: EMSP 200 and permission of the director. Lecture and laboratory course: patient assessment, airway management, intravenous therapy, shock management, and administration of pharmacological agents. Fa only. (51.0904)

EMSP 204. Cardiac Emergencies. 4-3-3. Co-requisites: EMSP 202, 206, 211. Lecture and laboratory course covering the pathophysiology, assessment, and current treatment modalities for cardiac patients. Emphasis on cardiac monitoring, EKG interpretation, defibrillation/cardioversion, and pharmacological intervention. Fa only. (51.0904)

EMSP 206. Traumatic Emergencies. 3-2-3. Co-requisites: EMSP 202, 204, 211. Lecture and laboratory course: pathophysiology, assessment, and current treatment modalities for the patient with traumatic injuries; includes discussions on kinematics of trauma, burn management, and multisystems trauma. EMSP 211. Emergency Medical Care Practicum II. 2-0-10. Co-requisites: EMSP 202, 204, 206. Clinical experience in an approved facility to include emergency department, anesthesia, surgery, intensive care, and laboratory venipuncture. Fa only. (51.0904)

EMSP 220. Medical Emergencies. 4-3-3. Prerequisite: EMSP 211. Co-requisites: EMSP 222, 224, 229. Lecture and laboratory skills course: pathophysiology, assessment, and current treatment modalities for common medical emergencies including respiratory disorders, anaphylaxis, stroke, epilepsy, diabetes, the acute abdomen, poisoning, and drug overdose. EMSP 222. Obstetrical and Pediatric Emergencies. 2-1-3. Co-requisites: EMSP 220, 224, 229. Lecture and laboratory course: gynecological, obstetrical, and pediatric emergencies. Emphasis on normal childbirth, prepartum complication, neonatal care, pediatric medical and traumatic emergencies, and child abuse. Sp only. (51.0904)

EMSP 224. Advanced Paramedic Skills. 2-2-0. Co-requisites: EMSP 220, 222, 229. Classroom discussion, practical demonstrations, and skills sessions. EMSP 229. Emergency Medical Care Practicum III. 3-0-15. Co-requisites: EMSP 220, 222, 224. Clinical experience in an approved facility to include emergency department, anesthesia, intensive care, labor and deliver, pediatrics, and psychiatric care. Sp only. (51.0904)

EMSP 231. Emergency Medical Care Practicum IV. 4-0-20. Prerequisite: EMSP 229. Field internship with an EMS affiliate. Emphasis on pre-hospital EMS services, emergency vehicle operation, and patient stabilization and transport. Su only. (51.0904)

EMSP 236. Comprehensive Emergency Medical Care Therapeutics. 2-1-3. Co-requisite: EMSP 231 or permission of Program Director. A comprehensive review of theoretical knowledge and clinical skills specific to the scope of practice of the EMT-paramedic. Su only. (51.0904)
