ATHLETIC TRAINING (ATTR-51.0913)

Selective admission is required for all ATTR courses 200-level and above. Due to the nature of athletic training and the requirements placed on education programs by the national accreditation agency; the academic, laboratory, and clinical experience hours may exceed those expected for credit awarded that course.

ATTR 101. Careers in Sports Medicine. 1-1-0. Open to all students. Course will provide insight into Sports Medicine careers in Allied Health such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, orthopedic surgery, physician assistant and strength and conditioning. (51.0913)

ATTR 102. Clinical Introduction to Athletic Training. 2-1-5.  Credit or registration in ATTR 101. Observations about the care and treatment of athletic injuries under the supervision of a BOC certified athletic trainer(s). Includes CPR, AED and First Aid certifications for those who qualify.   (51.0913)

ATTR 220. Acute Care in Sport and Exercise. 3-2-3. Prerequisite:  Grade of C or better in BIOL 116. Introduction to the care and treatment of acute injuries and illnesses.  (51.0913)

ATTR 222. Foundations of Athletic Training. 3-2-3 Prerequisite: BIOL 114, 115. Basic theory and skills in the understanding, prevention, and management of injury. (51.0913)

ATTR 230. Musculoskeletal Anatomy and Palpation. 3-2-3. Prerequisite: Credit or registration in BIOL 116. In depth study of the musculoskeletal system including proper palpation techniques and muscle origin, insertion, action and innervations. (51.0913)

ATTR 232. Advanced Applications in Athletic Training. 1-0-3. Prerequisite: ATTR 222. Advanced preventative taping and wrapping techniques for the upper and lower extremities along with the selection and fitting of supportive and protective equipment. (51.0913)

ATTR 250. Psychosocial Issues in Sport and Exercise. 2-2-0. Introduces the common psychosocial aspects, therapeutic communication techniques, and the interventions used with a physically active population. (51.0913)

ATTR 280. Therapeutic Modalities. 3-2-3. Prerequisite: Grade of C or better in ATTR 220 and either PHYS 101 or 151. Methods and techniques in the application of therapeutic modalities and their use in the treatment of athletic injuries. (51.0913)

ATTR 291. Clinical Experiences I. 2-0-10. Prerequisites: ATTR 102 and credit or registration in ATTR 222. Clinical experiences under the direct supervision of a clinical instructor with emphasis on basic prevention of injury of the physically active. Fa only. (51.0913)

ATTR 292. Clinical Experiences II. 2-0-10. Prerequisites: ATTR 220, 222. Clinical experiences under the direct supervision of a clinical instructor with emphasis on protective equipment, advanced techniques in injury prevention, and emergency care. Sp only. (51.0913).

ATTR 300. Evaluation of Lower Body Injuries. 3-2-3. Prerequisites: ATTR 222, 230. ATTR majors only.  Theory and application of the evaluation techniques of lower body injuries and illnesses commonly sustained by the physically active. (51.0913)

ATTR 325. Evaluation of Upper Body Injuries. 3-2-3. Prerequisites: ATTR 222,  230. ATTR majors only. Theory and application of the evaluation techniques of upper body injuries and illnesses commonly sustained by the physically active. (51.0913)

ATTR 380. Primary Care of the Athlete. 3-3-0. Prerequisite: ATTR, AHPR, AHSM or HPED major. Theories and applications of primary care for the physically active including: common medical conditions, therapeutic use of drugs, and the use of supplements for enhanced performance. Sp only. (51.0913)

Clinical experiences under the direct supervision of a clinical instructor with emphasis on protective equipment and the assessment and treatment of lower extremity injuries sustained by the physically active. ATTR 480. Organization and Administration of Athletic Training. 3-3-0. Prerequisite: ATTR 423 or permission of department head. Organizational and administrative issues concerning the operation of an athletic training facility with practical hands-on approach. (51.0913)

ATTR 490. Sports Medicine Clinical Practicum. 6-0-30. Prerequisite:  permission of  program director. Clinical experience in an area of major responsibility providing total athletic training care for an assigned team area under the guidance of a BOC certified athletic trainer(s) and/or team physician(s).
