DESCRIPTION: Low levels of health literacy among patients are having a devastating effect on our nation’s healthcare system in terms of negative health outcomes and increased healthcare costs. The goal of this continuing nursing education activity is to enhance the registered nurse’s knowledge base regarding the patient’s level of health literacy. Participants will learn to define health literacy, identify patients with low levels of health literacy, and use screening tools to measure health literacy. In addition, interventions to address this problem will be presented along with methods of evaluating effectiveness. Consequences of low health literacy levels will also be discussed. This educational activity is designed for all registered nurses who provide patient education at the bedside, in outpatient settings, and in formal educational programs.
