Diabates: Why, When & What To Do

Speakers:
Elaine Templet RN, CDE is currently a Diabetic Educator at TGMC. She has 30 years of nursing in major healthcare systems. She has been in the role of diabetes educator for 15 years with a focus on insulin pump therapy encompassing training, marketing and sales. She has been a facilitator of diabetes medical management in collaboration with healthcare providers across the country. Elaine has facilitated the achievement of optimal patient outcomes through application of clinical expertise and by serving as a member of the patient care management team at TGMC. She is responsible for data collection and analysis, coordinating quality improvement and risk management programs.
Cynthia Blanchard RN, CDE is the Program Coordinator of the Diabetes Management Center at TGMC. She has 35 years of nursing in major healthcare systems with 17 years as a diabetes educator with a focus on disease state management for diabetes. She has networked nationwide to aid in the development of a diabetes self-management curriculum. Cynthia developed a process and implemented a diabetes program to align with American Diabetes Association requirements for program recognition. She has traveled to eight LSU healthcare systems to share an educational model, intended to provide continuity for diabetes disease management. Cynthia has acquired and maintained ADA recognition and was second in the state hospital system to obtain recognition.
Amanda Valence RD, LDN, CDE is a licensed registered dietician and certified diabetes educator who provides quality nutrition education to improve nutrition/health status within the community. She has earned her BSN with a concentration in Family and Consumer Sciences Dietetics Program from NSU in 2002. She is currently a Diabetes Dietitian Outpatient Educator responsible for nutrition education to patients and family members. She is co-creator of a successful Gestational Diabetes education program following the Life With Diabetes Guidelines. She is currently employed at Terrebonne General Medical Center in Houma.
DESCRIPTION: This activity addresses diabetes as an epidemic in the U.S. Learn to analyze acute complications of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia and identify corrective action for each. Analyze traditional inpatient glycemic control and current recommendations to improve care and outcomes. Compare current strategies for the treatment of type 2 diabetes . Analyze the chronic complications of hyperglycemia related to macrovascular and microvascular disease. A registered dietician will illustrate facts and myths of nutrition and review current guidelines. Designed for nurses and dieticians who manage the care of diabetic clients.
