Basics of American Sign Language-

Learn the basics of American Sign Language (ASL) from an instructor with over 20 years of experience teaching the language.  You will learn how ASL is different from other sign languages used in America, a bit of deaf culture, and the basic concepts you need to know to start communicating in ASL.  The course will cover basic vocabulary, numbers, fingerspelling, basic sentence structure, facial expressions, and much more.  This is a fun and interesting class you’ll enjoy.  Bring a friend to make practicing at home more fun!

* There is a required book for this class that you must purchase on your own.  It is available at Amazon.com, and can likely be ordered from other bookstores. It is running about $41 new and $20 used on Amazon right now.

A Basic Course in American Sign Language  by Humphries, Padden, and O’Rourke

Any edition is fine, but the students need to purchase the SPIRAL BOUND copy for ease in viewing with both hands free to sign.

Mathematics Enrichment (Online only)

 This online course includes a review of the basic skills needed to begin the study of college mathematics.  Based on a diagnostic test, participants will be assigned lessons to address specific mathematical areas.  The course is an online, software-driven course with an instructor on hand to provide individualized assistance, as needed.  Participation in this course requires that students have an ACT-math sub-score of 17-18 or a COMPASS math score that places them into a developmental math course.  Once enrolled, students will be required to purchase an access code for Pearson’s My Math Test software at a cost of $10.  At the conclusion of the course, students may take the COMPASS mathematics test to determine mathematics course placement.

Course Fee:  $100

Software Fee:  $10 (purchased from Pearson at www.mymathtest.com)

Post- course Compass Test Fee:  $10 (if taken at Nicholls State University’s Testing Center)

Note:  At least 10 students must enroll for the course to be held.

Web Design

Continuing education offers two courses (basic and advanced) teaching you everything you need to know about creating websites.

1. Understanding Website Basics – A general information class. Short web history, discussion about how the web works, purchasing a domain name, website hosting, choices for website creation tools and systems.

2. Websites Advanced: HTML, CSS, and Javascript Basics. Introduction to HTML markup, discussion of HTML versions, basic HTML tags and language structure, usage of CSS for styling, CSS properties, very basic discussion of javascript and it’s usage.

Personal Mastery 101

Personal Mastery 101 is designed to expose the learner to their own self, thus opening up a new world of opportunity and growth. Are you tired of being where you are, not feeling that you are accomplishing your purpose in life?  Then Personal Mastery 101 is the first steps to becoming the person that you are destined to become.
These interactive sessions are designed for the learner to look inward and take small but, courageous steps in their journey.  A WORD of  “Caution- taking this course, WIll CHANGE YOUR LIFE”.

Conversational  French-

Taught by a native French speaker, this six-week course will begin with basic French vocabulary, providing students the language foundation needed to conduct a basic French conversation. Students will gain basic fundamental knowledge of the French language.
