Everything you tell your counselor in session will be confidential. The fact that you come to counseling is confidential. Furthermore, your Counseling Center records are property of the Counseling Center and are separate from your university records. This means that your professor, friends and family will not know you attend counseling or what you discuss with your counselor.
There are exceptions to confidentiality in the following cases:
- If you sign a release allowing your counselor to speak with a specific person about your case;
- If you are a danger to yourself or others; it is court-ordered by a judge;
- If abuse or neglect of a minor, person with a disability or an elderly person is suspected.
This confidentiality statement applies to clients 18 and over.
