Undergraduate students
For undergraduate students, the cytotechnology program includes a pre-professional and professional phase. The pre-professional phase is for undergraduate students pursuing the health sciences specialized practice — cytotechnology concentration. This phase takes approximately three years to complete. Students automatically begin this phase once they are admitted to Nicholls.

To apply to the one-year professional phase, students must:

  • complete all prerequisite (pre-professional) coursework,
  • earn a grade of C or better in all required science courses and
  • maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5.

Post baccalaureate students
Individuals who meet the following requirements may apply directly to the professional phase. Applicants must:

  • hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 2.5 on all undergraduate work attempted and
  • have successfully completed the following undergraduate course requirements as specified by the American Society of Cytopathology, the accrediting agency for cytotechnology education programs:
    • 20 hours of biology
    • 6 hours of mathematics (algebra, trigonometry)
    • 8 hours of chemistry
    • one course each in:
      • research methodology,
      • medical terminology,
      • management and
      • histology.

Selective admission to professional phase
Enrollment in the professional phase is limited and the program admits only one professional class per year. Class size is limited to six students per year and is governed by the number of faculty and available clinical slots in each of the affiliated laboratories and clinic settings.
