Clinical Experience Requirements

Students are required to participate in clinical and practicum rotations at various affiliate sites during enrollment in the professional phase of the cytotechnology program. The program has affiliations for clinical practicum rotations at sites located in Houma, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette and Alexandria. (These locations are tentative and subject to change.)

The clinical affiliate sites provide students a variety of hands-on, educational experiences in clinical cytology. Clinical rotations to the various clinical sites are anticipated to begin during the spring semester (CYTO 440 - Clinical Practicum III).

The anticipated rotation schedule will be as follows:

  1. Students will earn 32 to 40 hours of clinical experience per week for a minimum of 6 to 8 weeks, which may extend to 12 weeks).
  2. Students will follow the typical workday and workweek schedule of the clinical facility.
  3. No more than two students at any on time may work at each clinical affiliate.
  4. The program director will coordinate with the supervising preceptor all scheduled experiences prior to rotation.

Due to the nature of cytotechnology education and the requirements placed on educational programs by the accreditation agency, the contact hours for academic, laboratory and clinical courses may exceed those required to earn credit in a particular course.
