Undergraduate Didactic Program and Post-Graduate Internship Program


Mission

The mission of the Nicholls State University dietetic internship program is to prepare competent, entry level dietetics practitioners who demonstrate responsible citizenship and leadership in the communities they serve. The dietetic internship program seeks to provide a high quality educational experience that will facilitate the development of professionals who will contribute to the quality of nutrition care and thereby overall health care provided in the region of south-central Louisiana and beyond.

Goals and Outcomes

These goals have been established to reflect the mission and the environment in which the program exists. The program goals are as follows:

1. The program will prepare competent, registry-eligible dietetics practitioners for general dietetics practice.

  • Alumni will achieve, over a five-year period, a pass rate of at least 80 percent on the RD exam.
  • Intern scores on self-assessment exam and on post clinical rotation exams at end of internship will be at least 70 percent.

2. The program will cultivate graduates who demonstrate professionalism through responsible citizenship and leadership in the community.

  • Interns will
    • participate in at least one community service project,
    • join the ADA and local dietetic association,
    • attend at one state or national professional conference and
    • provide a minimum of one nutrition presentation to a community group.

3. The program will be recognized as a provider of a high quality supervised practice experience.

  • Students and employers will rate the program as a 3 or better on the 5-point Likert scale for “preparation.”
  • Number of applications received each year for the dietetic internship will be at least 25. There will be a subset of applications from other universities each year.
  • Job placement in the field or graduate school attendance of 80 percent of graduates within one year of internship completion.

4. The program will utilize university and community resources to effectively provide a high quality supervised practice experience.

  • All resources will rate a 3 or better on the 5-point Likert scale of the Program Resource Survey.
  • Dietetic internship faculty will provide varied experiences based on community needs and will explore new opportunities for site experiences each year.
