Welcome
Welcome to the Department of Applied Sciences, a department administering unique programs in three technological areas in efforts to meet local, state and national needs. Geomatics, manufacturing engineering technology and petroleum services are Louisiana’s “one of a kind†programs offered here at Nicholls.
Geomatics is the science of surveying and mapping. Geomatics professionals are land surveyors, construction surveyors, mappers and planners, the core of what is needed to rebuild New Orleans and coastal Louisiana. Students train on the latest state-of-the-art instruments and are instructed by highly qualified faculty.
The manufacturing engineering technology program trains students to become industrial program/project managers, an area of high demand in offshore structures fabrication, shipbuilding, petroleum support and process industries. Courses are heavy with hands-on laboratory experiences and team projects. All students are involved in the concept of design and production through a mandatory team project that is annually entered in a nationally competitive event.
The petroleum services programs are specifically designed to meet oil industry needs in operational management and safety technology. It is the only known program of its kind, uniquely scheduling courses to meet the need of the 7-days-on, 7-days-off and the 14-days-on, 14-days-off oilfield shift workers. Graduates are elevated to management positions in safety, drilling operations and production operations, or they are employed in the service and supply component of the petroleum industry.
