Manufacturing Engineering Technology

1108-engineering-hotrod-01.jpg

South Louisiana shipbuilding, offshore fabrication and manufacturing industries are experiencing an ever increasing need for high-tech personnel as they continue to serve customers across the globe.

The Nicholls manufacturing engineering technology program prepares students to meet the challenges of this field, particularly as it becomes dominated by computers and automation. In four years, students learn technical and communication skills and gain hands-on experience in laboratory settings.

The manufacturing engineering technology program is ideal for students who enjoy solving mechanical problems, working in teams and learning state-of-the-art technology. Students develop a broad background in product design, manufacturing, management, concurrent engineering and teamwork.

Manufacturing Engineering Technology Education Objectives

To produce graduates who…

1. Contribute in manufacturing, fabrication, and production industries with tools and techniques of the discipline.

2. Work as a team to solve manufacturing, assembly, and related problems and make improvements to products and processes.

3. Accept leadership roles, communicate effectively, and contribute to manufacturing decisions in a global economy.

4. Continue to learn and accept increasingly responsible assignment.

Manufacturing Engineering Technology Program Outcomes

1.       Students demonstrate a mastery of knowledge, techniques, skills, and modern tools used in the manufacturing and assembly disciplines. (ABET 3a/SME Comp. Gap B1, C2)

2.       Students apply mathematics, science, and engineering to analyze the cost, quality, and design of a product and the cost, quality, design, and productivity of a manufacturing process or system. (ABET 3b/SME CG B1, C2)

3.       Students design and conduct experiments in a manufacturing laboratory environment involving manufacturing process and equipment variables, analyze the data, and make decisions based on those data and analyses.  (ABET 3c/SME CG B5)

4.       Students apply creativity to the design of manufactured products and manufacturing processes and systems.  (Including the use of CAD tools, analysis tools, machines, tooling, fixturing, scheduling, facilities planning, and process control.)  (ABET 3d/SME CG B3)

5.       Students work effectively in a project environment.  (ABET 3e/SME CG A2)

6.       Students apply problem solving techniques and tools in identifying and solving technical problems.   (ABET 3f/SME CG A4)

7.       Students communicate using oral, graphical, and written means.  (ABET 3g/SME CG A1)

8.       Students recognize the need for life-long learning and professional development. (ABET 3k)

9.       Students understand and appreciate professional, ethical, and social responsibilities and respect diversity in all aspects.  (ABET 3i/SME CG A5)

10.    Students apply concepts of quality, timeliness, and continuous improvement required in the modern globally competitive business environment.  (ABET 3k/SME CG B4 C4)

11.    Students practice teamwork and project management skills in an extended project as team member, designer, manager, and leader.  (ABET/TAC Manufacturing Engineering Technology Program/SME CG A2, A3)

12.    Students select engineering materials for applications based on their properties and how they may affect and be affected by the process or use.  (ABET/TAC Manufacturing Engineering Technology Program/SME CG B2)

13.    Students defend decisions about manufacturing costs, profits, and losses, and they  judge economic consequences of design, production strategies, methods of control, and supply systems.  (ABET/TAC Manufacturing Engineering Technology Program/SME CG C1, C3)

14.    Students acquire specialized knowledge in at least two specific manufacturing areas from sources outside the classroom: library, internet, interviews, etc. (ABET /AC Manufacturing Engineering Technology Program/SME CG D1)
