An increasing emphasis on safety in the workplace has greatly enhanced the need for individuals trained in accident prevention. Students pursuing an associate degree in petroleum services with a safety technology option learn how to ensure worker and environmental safety while also keeping up with the changing government regulations, increasing industry standards and common problems, such as workplace drug or alcohol abuse.
The Nicholls safety technology program prepares students to:
- conduct work site assessments to identify safety, health and environmental risks,
- implement hazard control and loss prevention measures,
- access and monitor hazard control measures,
- develop and manage disaster planning and emergency response strategies,
- communicate safety, health and environmental risks and controls both verbally and in writing to management, employees, clients, contractors, vendors and regulators,
- pursue professional certification by passing the examination for the Occupational Health Safety Technologist certification from the Council on Certification of Health, Environmental and Safety Technologist.
