Gallery Exhibition-Ameen Art Gallery

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

The Exhibition “Engraving 2009: Invitational Print Exchange is on Exhibit in the Ameen Art Gallery through Sept. 11, 2009. Gallery hours are 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. The exhibition is free and open to the public, and is located in 200 Talbot Hall.

The exhibition includes 36 limited edition prints by 36 artists from around the United States including Richie Lasansky and Rudy Pozzati. This exhibition will also be shown at the University of West England – Bower Ashton, in Bristol England; Salem State College, Salem, MA; and McNeese Sate University.

All of the prints are made using the traditional technique called engraving, in which a sharp tool (called a burin) is used to incise lines into a copper plate. To print the plate, ink is rubbed into the engraved grooves in the metal, then transferred to paper using a hand operated printing press. The technique is quite old, dating back to the Gothic period, but is still used for printing paper currency.

These prints are each hand made by the artists. The editions are limited to just forty signed and numbered prints. All of the prints on exhibit are # 18 of 40.

The images range from very realistic renderings of people and objects, to abstract and non-objective images. Most of the prints are black and white, though several are printed in vivid colors.

Monster Piano Concert

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Eighteen pianists, including faculty, students, alumni, and guests, will perform on six Steinway pianos, including the university’s own concert grand and three others, plus two more provided by Hall Piano Company, Louisiana’s exclusive Steinway dealer.

“Last year’s concert was as exciting for us as it was for the audience,” Dr. Carol Britt, head of the Department of Music, said. “It will be quite a spectacle to see 18 pianists on six pianos for the finale. Last year the performers included music faculty, piano students and piano graduates. This year we will have many of the same pianists – plus a few of our piano-playing friends. It will be wonderfully entertaining.”

The evening will begin with wine and hors d’oeuvres at 6:30 p.m., followed by the performance at 7:30. Tickets are $50 per person and include food, drink and entertainment. All proceeds will go toward purchasing additional Steinway pianos for the music program at Nicholls.
