Erin Galliano Babin flipped through her research paper, searching for her grade and any other comments her professor had left in the margins. However, Babin found a message she says she’ll never forget: “I hope you are going to go to graduate school!”

“That comment boosted my confidence and strengthened my drive to begin graduate school immediately after finishing my bachelor’s degree at Nicholls,” Babin says.

And, now she’s almost done. Babin will graduate from Tulane University with a Master of Social Work degree in May 2007. Having already completed the field work required for her degree, she accepted a social worker/case manager position at Thibodaux Regional Medical Center.

Babin works as part of the case management team and is responsible for social assessments, discharge planning, patient advocacy, resource management, women’s health, patient education and crisis intervention. She says her undergraduate internship at the Office of Youth Development in Thibodaux is what best prepared her for her current career.

“This experience exposed me to many different areas of social work, including juvenile justice, community services, school social work, family services and child protective services,” Babin says.

Babin plans to start working on her license in clinical social work in May 2007 and is a member of the National Association of Social Workers, Phi Kappa Phi and Kappa Omicron Nu.
