Birth to Five/Early Interventionist Education

birthtofiveintro.jpg

Research indicates that a strong early childhood education can have long-term benefits for both children and society. The Nicholls birth to five/early interventionist education program caters to individuals who enjoy working with families and have a desire to educate preschool and kindergarten children.

Graduates of the program are prepared not only to provide early learning services to preschool and kindergarten students but also to educate children with special needs.

Students are required to take courses focusing on children ages birth to five in the following content areas:

  • special needs
  • visual, dramatic and musical creative arts
  • language and literature
  • classroom management
  • math, science and technology
  • lesson planning and assessment

BFEI students must complete:

  • one practicum in a preschool setting and
  • one student teaching semester
    • in a kindergarten class for one half and
    • in an early intervention class for the other half of the semester.

Students must complete requirements, including passage of necessary Praxis exams, prior to student teaching. View Praxis Information and Student Teaching Enrollment Process for details.

Upon graduation, students are eligible for Louisiana teacher certifications in preschool and kindergarten education and certification as an early-interventionist specialist.
