The future of society always rests in the hands of the newest generation. With today’s challenges, there is a great demand for individuals to guide and care for young children, some of whom have already learned that life can be difficult.

Students pursuing an associate degree in child development and preschool management at Nicholls are prepared to teach young children and manage child care facilities. The two-year curriculum combines general education courses with specialized courses in:

• child development,
• family studies,
• nutrition and
• education.

The program allows students to:

• observe the early childhood setting,
• teach young children who are enrolled in the Nicholls Generations Teaching Generations preschool and
• complete a semester-long practicum in a public school pre-kindergarten classroom.

Upon completion of the associate degree, students may choose to continue their education by pursuing a bachelor’s degree in birth to five/early interventionist education. With the bachelor’s degree, students are certified to teach preschool and kindergarten in the public school system and to serve as an early intervention specialist. All but 10 credit hours obtained with the child development and preschool management degree transfer to the birth to five/early interventionist education degree program.
