Hardship Fee Exemption

The Legislature and the University are concerned about students with financial hardships being able to pay the recent increase in tuition & fees. For this reason the University has revised the criteria for the Hardship Fee Exemption to determine which students may receive an exemption.

CRITERIA

In order to qualify for the hardship fee exemption, a student must meet the following criteria:

  1. Must be a Louisiana resident.
  2. Must be eligible for and receive a Pell Grant.
  3. Must have been awarded the maximum allowable subsidized Stafford Loan.
  4. All types of financial assistance including grants, loans, scholarships, fee exemptions, etc. must be less than the total of the following:
    1. Mandatory tuition and fees ($1,825.35)*
    2. Estimated cost of books ($600)*
    3. Estimated lab fees ($47)*
    4. Actual other charges including housing and meals but excluding fines and indebtedness
  5. Must be maintaining satisfactory academic progress for financial aid purposes.
  6. Must be enrolled full-time.
  7. Must be in receipt of the award letter, issued by the Financial Aid Office, before the first day of classes for each semester.

If you qualify for the exemption based on the above criteria, you must complete the Application for Hardship Fee Exemption before the exemption can be awarded. You can download the application here in Word format. Applications can also be picked up in the Office of Financial Aid located in Candies Hall. This application must be submitted before the first day of classes for the semester in which you are applying.
