Early is a professor of English, African American studies and American cultural studies at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., where he also serves as the Merle Kling professor of modern letters and the director for the Center for Humanities.
Early has compiled and edited numerous volumes of essays on culture, ranging from family and sports to music and poetry. He is also a National Public Radio commentator, fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and winner of the 1994 National Book Critics Circle Award for criticism. Early has twice been nominated for Grammy Awards in the Best Album Notes category.
