THE GENERAL STUDIES CHECKLIST
To help you keep track of the courses that you need to take to get your degree, your General Studies advisor uses a kind of "curriculum map" or checklist. This checklist shows you what courses you need to take to obtain a Bachelor of General Studies degree.
Notice that the checklist is divided into groups of courses that you must take. One large group —the General Education group— contains courses that all students must take before graduating. Another important group are those courses that are requirements within the Department of General Studies. The foreign language requirement, for instance, is a department requirement. Some other departments may not require that students take foreign language courses.
The checklist also contains some important general requirements that you need to keep track of. For instance, in General Studies no more than 30 business hours can count toward your degree.
Of particular importance is the requirement for a minor. A minor is a specialized grouping of courses in a particular field. All students who entered the university in the fall 2001 semester must have a minor before they can get a Bachelor of General Studies degree. The courses that count toward a minor are listed in the Bulletin under the department offering the minor. In other words, to see what courses qualify you to have a minor in English, look up the English department in the Bulletin for a list of courses. A 2.0 average is required in the courses that count toward the minor.
Remember, also, that at some time in your freshman year, you must "declare" for your minor. You "declare" by filling out a form that names your minor. Though you are free to change your minor at any time, changing your minor could slow down your progress toward your degree. Please put careful thought into that area of study called your minor.
The General Studies web-page contains the form used to declare your minor. Check this page early in your career and see your advisor as soon as possible.
