Minor
Demonstration of Educational Depth
All students entering the General Studies program must demonstrate educational depth in an academic area with at least an overall C average to receive a Bachelor of General Studies degree. This depth is most easily demonstrated by why of an academic minor of at least 18 hours, 9 hours of which are at the 300 level or above. For graduation purposes, this academic depth must be approved by the Interdisciplinary Studies department head. Students should see their Interdisciplinary Studies advisor as early as possible during their freshman year to choose (declare) a minor or to determine another means for meeting the requirement of academic depth. Students may also choose to complete more than one minor.
A minor is a specific area of study in a particular discipline. The minor is similar to a major, but fewer courses are required. The courses required for a minor are determined by the department where these minor courses are taught.
Below is a listing of all minors available, along with their requirements.
Minors (Listed By College & Department)
I. College Of Arts And Sciences
Animal Science: AGSC 111 (3), 112 (1), 305 (4), 315 (3), 384 (4), and 425 (4). A minimum grade of C in each course is required for this minor. A grade of C or better is required in each course.
Art: 24 hrs. in art of which at least 6 must be in courses numbered 300 or above. A minor in art history requires 18 hrs. in this subject and any 2 studio courses numbered 200 or above.
Biology: 24 hrs. in the Biological Sciences with a minimum grade of C in all courses to include BIOL 155, 156, 203 204, 320, 370, 401, or 499, and 440-441 or 326.. Students may alternately receive a Biology minor in one of the following concentrations; Environmental, Marine, or Micro. Students minoring in one of these concentrations must complete BIOL 155, 156, 320 and 12 additional semester hrs. approved by the department head from courses listed in that concentration area with a minimum grade of C.
Chemistry: minor must include CHEM 105, 106, 110, 221, 222, 226, 300, 302 and at least 3 additional semester hrs. chosen from other chemistry courses numbered 300 or above. A grade of C or better is required in each course.
Computer Science: A minor consists of CMPS 120, 220, 221, 222, 350, and 6 additional hours to be selected from any 300- or 400 level computer science course that counts for credit toward the major in computer science. A grade of C or better is required in each computer science course.
Criminal Justice: 18 hrs. in Criminal Justice to include CRJU 101. A grade of C or better is required in each course.
English: A minor in English requires the completion of 24 semester hours with a minimum grade of C in all courses in English, to include English 101 and 102, English 315 or 316 and English 321 or 322, and at least 9 semester hours of English electives from courses numbered 300 or above. A grade of C or better is required in each course.
French: 24 semester hrs. of French to include FREN 101, 102, 201, 202, 304, 405 and 6 semesters hrs. of French electives from courses numbered 300 or above. A grade of C or better is required in each course.
Geography: 18 semester hrs. to include GEOG 103, 104, 331, 370, 375 and GEOL 100. A grade of C or better is required in each course.
Government: 18 semester hrs. to include Govt. 101, and 15 semester hrs. of electives to be chosen from courses 300-level or above. A grade of C or better is required in each course.
History: 24 hrs. of History to include HIST 101, 102 or 150, 151 and 255, 256, and 12 hrs. in courses 300-level or above. A grade of C or better is required in each course.
Legal Assistant Studies: 18 hrs. in Legal Assistant Studies. A grade of C or better is required in each course.
Mass Communication:18 semester hrs. to include MACO 101, 251, 370, and 9 hrs. of electives in MACO, 6 of which must be at the 300 level or above.
Mathematics: 9 semester hours of credit in courses approved by the head of the MATH Dept. numbered above MATH 265. A grade of C or better is required in each course.
Plant Science: AGSC 131 (3), 132 (1), 352 (4) plus 10 additional hours selected from: AGSC 305 (4), 306 (3), 307 (3), 308 (4), 309 (3), 386 (3) and 452 (4). A minimum grade of C is required in all courses required for this minor.
Sociology: 18 semester hrs. to include SOCI 151 and 15 semester hrs. to chosen from courses 300-level or above. A grade of C or better is required in each course.
Spanish: A minor in Spanish requires the completion of 24 semester hours with a minimum grade of C in all courses in Spanish to include SPAN 101, 102, 201, 202, 312, 318, 324, and 3 semester hours of a Spanish elective from courses numbered 300 or above.
Speech: In order to obtain a minor in Speech, students must take a total of 18 hours of Speech courses. These will include Speech 101, plus 15 additional hours, at least 9 of which must be at the 300 level or above.
International Studies Minor
The university awards a minor in International Studies which requires the successful completion of 18 semester hours to include Geography 104 and 15 semester hours to be chosen from the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Business concentrations listed below. The fifteen (15) hours require successful completion of 6 semester hours from two of the three concentrations listed below and 3 semester hours from the remaining concentration.

II. College Of Business Administration
18 hrs. with a minimum grade of C in each course. Minors available and course requirements are as follows:
Accounting: ACCT 203, 204, 303, 304, and 6 additional hrs. of ACCT other than ACCT 200 or 300;
Business Administration: ACCT 203, 204, BSAD 221, ECON 255, MNGT 301, and MKTG 300;
Computer Information Systems: CMPS 120; CIS 200, 231, 305, 306; CIS 310 or above or ACCT 351;
Economics: ECON 211, 212, 375, 376, 3 hrs. of 300- or 400-level ECON courses and 3 hrs. of 400-level ECON courses;
Finance: FINC 302, 356, 403, and 9 hrs. of FINC electives;
Management: MNGT 301 and 15 semester hrs. from MNGT courses, MKTG 470 or 475;
Marketing: MKTG 300 and 15 hrs. from MKTG courses at least 6 semester hrs. must be from 400-level MKTG courses or MNGT 455.
Note: No more than 30 hours of BSAD courses can count toward the BGS degree.
III. College Of Education
Family and Consumer Sciences: 19 hrs of coursework with a minimum grade of C in each course is required for a minor. Minors available and courses requirements are as follows:
- Addictive Behaviors: FACS 448, 461, 464, 471, NURS 307, and SOCI 387. Non-majors who elect to complete this minor must complete FACS 334 and 348 which are prerequisite courses. These courses meet the coursework requirements of the state for certification as a Substance Abuse Counselor.
- FACS: FACS 111, 130, 334, 344, and 446. Two additional 3 hrs courses must be selected from FACS courses numbered 300 or above.
- Gerontology: FACS 431, 464, 470, H&PE 492, NURS 315 or SOCE 372 and NURS 352. Non majors who elect to complete this minor must complete FACS 231 and 334, which are prerequisite courses.
Psychology And Counselor Education: Students who are not majoring in PSYC may complete a minor in the field by earning 21 semester hrs. of credit as follows: PSYC 101, 204 or 211, 208 or 301 or 302 or 402, and 12 hrs. of electives in PSYC. Students majoring in a teacher ed program are not allowed to select a minor in PSYC.
IV. University College
Culinary Arts: Eighteen hours of course work, with a minimum grade of “C” in each course, is required for a minor in Culinary Arts. A student must complete CULA 101, CULA 111, CULA 221, and DIET 200, plus seven additional credit hours selected from the Culinary Arts curriculum.
Humanities: 18 hours above Gen Ed requirements in the following curricula: literature, fine arts, foreign languages, history, humanities, music (non-performance courses), philosophy, or speech (non-performance). Because of content, the following courses may be counted in the required 18 hours: GOVT 355, and MACO 499. A maximum of 9 hours of travel-study courses in any of these curricula may be selected for the minor. At least 9 hours of the minor must be taken in courses numbered 300 or above. Three hours above degree requirements may be taken in the student’s major.This minor is available to all students in all majors.
Internet Studies and Web Development: An innovative minor is offered to students wishing to supplement their major with knowledge of the Internet while focusing on different areas including Web tools, webpage and online database creation and other current topics. The minor consists of CMPS 125, CMPS 250, CMPS 340, CMPS 470 and 6 hours of 300- and 400-level electives that address content and issues related to Internet Studies and Web Development. preferably these 6 hours of electives will be in courses in the student’s major. These electives must be approved by the Head of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies.
Social Sciences: 18 hours above General Education requirements in the following curricula: Economics, Family and Consumers, Geography, Government, Mass communication, Psychology, and Sociology. The total hourse in the social sciences minor (18) must include courses in at least three areas of the social sciences outside the student’s major with a minimum of 9 hours in course numbered 300 or above. A maximum of 9 hours of travel-study courses in any of these curricula may be selected for the minor. Three hours above degree requirements may be taken in the student’s major.
