Student Organizations offered by the Department of History & Social Sciences


The Department of History and Social Sciences offers a wide array of extracurricular opportunities that provide Majors and Minor with hands-on experience in their respective field of study, scholarly enrichment, and interaction with colleagues and professors. These organizations and honor societies demonstrate a commitment on the part of the Department of History and Social Sciences to make the Nicholls experience a rewarding one, consistent with the University pledge of providing "education with a personal touch."

Organization Descriptions

Pi Sigma Alpha

Pi Sigma Alpha is a national political science honorary founded at the University of Texas in 1920 and the Alpha Gamma Alpha Chapter of Nicholls State University was founded more recently in 2004 for the purpose of bringing together students and faculty interested in the study of government and politics.  Membership in Pi Sigma Alpha is open to all Government majors and minors who place within the top-third of their class, have a 3.5 GPA in Government courses, and have completed twelve hours in Government (at least three at the 300 level).  If you think you may qualify or are interested in Pi Sigma Alpha, then contact Prof. Stockley for more information.

Phi Alpha Theta

Phi Alpha Theta is the international honorary society for history.  It was organized in 1921 and the Nicholls Chapter, Omicron-Chi, was organized in 1969. It is a professional society whose purpose is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians.  It provides scholarships and various monetary awards.  Students from Nicholls have presented papers at the regional convention of PAT.

This Nicholls chapter has had a number of activities, both social and academic.  These include the annual pool party, a trip to the D-Day museum, visits to a graduate seminar at another university, a works-in progress program, and other field trips.  The decisions as to what will be done belong to the students.

Young Democrats

The Nicholls State University Young Democrats in an organization for all registered students who have an active interest in governmental affairs, who are seeking a mechanism for satisfying political expression, and who want to make the members of the campus and community aware that young people intend to take an active role in political affairs.  The vision of Young Democrats is to make Nicholls State University and its surrounding region a better place by promoting its issues, its young people, and the Democratic Party.  If you are interested in becoming involved with the Nicholls State University Young Democrats then feel free to contact Prof. Stockley or Prof. Thysell.  More information about the National Young Democrats can be found here and the Louisiana Democratic Party can be found here.

Sociology Club

The Law Club The Law Club at Nicholls State University is an organization for all students who are interested in legal affairs or have an interest in furthering their legal studies.  The Law Club at Nicholls is an active organization that sponsors an array of activities designed to familiarize students with the legal system and prepare themselves for Law School.  The Law Club regularly schedules trips to correctional facilities, courtrooms, and law schools to expose students to the various opportunities available in the legal community.  Additionally, the Law Club also continually invites guest speakers to discuss a wide range of topics.  If you are interested in becoming an active member of the Nicholls Law Club then contact Prof. Lafont for more information.

CLIO-History Club

CLIO is for all students interested in learning more about History.  Interested students should contact Russell Price.

College Republicans

The College Republicans of Nicholls State University are advised by Glenn Antizzo.
