The University, located in Thibodaux, Louisiana, is a comprehensive, regional University of approximately 7,500 students in a region of south central Louisiana with a population of more than 250,000. Tax-assisted and coeducational, it opened its doors September 23, 1948 as Francis T. Nicholls Junior College of Louisiana State University.

The 210-acre campus, one part of historic Acadia Plantation, fronts on Bayou Lafourche, about 50 miles southwest of New Orleans and 60 miles southeast of Baton Rouge.
