Organizations
The Department of Languages and Literature offers the following organizations for those who enjoy literature and languages.
The Alpha Theta chapter of Sigma Tau Delta offers full memberships to English majors and associate memberships to students in related fields. This international English honor society recognizes high achievement in and promotes an interest in languages and literature. Membership is by invitation. The English Society is open to all Nicholls students. The society offers stimulating opportunities for intellectual and social enrichment. Some of the organization’s activities include used book sales, poetry readings and guest lecturers as well as an annual costume party and crawfish boil. For more information, contact Dr. R. Students of Languages (S.O.L.) is open to all Nicholls students. The organization promotes language learning and cultural exploration. Activities include participation in Diversity Week, bake sales, scholarship fundraising, international student travel and much more. For more information, contact Mabel Illidge or Dr. Robin White.
Grupo Cervantes is an organization that brings together hispanophiles from all sectors of the university – students, faculty and administration – and friends from the Houma –Thibodaux area who have an interest in the Spanish language, the various branches of its extraordinary culture, the diverse landscape and the wonderful people. People gather to exchange ideas and hear and speak the language, all while enjoying great comradeship. For more information, contact Mabel Illidge.
La table française (the French Table) meets once a week during
the fall and spring semesters to give francophones and francophiles an
opportunity to meet other French speakers and to practice speaking French. Anyone
