    Databases

NOTE: NOTE: Many of these databases can be searched simultaneously, as they are all EBSCO products. When you click on an EBSCO database, you will see a blue and green interface with the word EBSCO Host in the top left corner. To simultaneously search EBSCO databases, look for the box, below the search interface, that says "in:". You should see the name of the database you chose to search in this box, but you will notice that this box has a pull-down menu attached to it. Simply open that menu, and (1) scroll until you see the name of the second, third, etc. database(s) you want to search, (2) put a check in thebox that is next to that database, and (3) click "Submit". You will know you have done this correctly when you see the phrase Specific Databases in the box that has "in:" next to it, and below this you see the names of all the databases you wish to search listed. You will then see that you are searching multiple databases at one time.

Academic Search Premier is a large multi-disciplinary academic database that contains over 4,000 full-text titles. Over 3,100 of these titles are peer-reviewed.

Business Source Premier provides full text for nearly 3,300 scholarly business journals, including full text for more than 1000 peer-reviewed business publications.

CINAHL the Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature, is the authoritative resource for nursing and allied health professionals, students, educators and researchers. The Cochrane Library includes full-text access to health care information in such areas as controlled trials, systematic reviews, methodology, health technology assessment and evaluation.

ERIC the Educational Resource Information Center, contains more than 2,200 digests along with references for additional information from over 980 educational and education-related journals. From 1993 to present, ERIC Level 1 documents (those cleared by the contributor for distribution in all media), and Level 2A (documents restricted to dissemination on microfiche and in electronic form only)-about 95% of the collection. These were once only available online through EDRS. Additionally, this version of ERIC allow linking to the full-text inside other EBSCOHost databases for ERIC Journals.

Health Source provides nearly 600 scholarly full text journals focusing on many medical disciplines.

MEDLINE is produced by the National Library of Medicine and contains over 4 million abstracts and citations.

    Finding Books in iLINK

Ellender Memorial Library's Online Public Access Catalog is called iLink. To search for books, videos, periodicals, etc., simply click on the link from the library's homepage. You may click on either iLink or on the iLink Power Search. The simple search allows you to search by author, title, keyword, subject, or periodical title. It will suffice if you know the author or title of a source, or it is a simple keyword search, such as the following:

    AUTHOR SEARCH: Vogelzang, Jody
TITLE SEARCH: Pediatric manual of clinical dietetics
    WORD OR PHRASE SEARCH: dietetics

However, if you wish to compose a complex search, such as finding books about the licensing of dietitians and nutritionists in the state of Louisiana, or finding a reference book about nutrition and dietetics terminology, you would be better off using the Power Search. For example, to find the latter, you could try the following:

    title=dietetics AND type=Reference book

The above search returned 3 hits.

The important thing to remember is that searching effectively involves coming up with a search strategy, and that strategy will probably involve using various synonyms and similar terms to maximize effectiveness.

By the same token, if you wanted to find serial (journal) titles about nutrition in our library, you might try the following two searches:

    SEARCH ONE:title=nutrition AND type=serial

    SEARCH TWO:subject=nutrition AND type=serial

The above searches returned 36 and 54 hits, respectively.
