The Economic Research Service (ERS) is the main source of economic information and research from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Located in Washington, DC, with approximately 450 employees, ERS research informs and enhances public and private decisionmaking on economic and policy issues related to agriculture, food, natural resources, and rural development.
Biology
ARKive is a freely accessible repository of digital images, video clips, and sound clips of worldwide animal and plant species. The site contains three main links: The Globally Endangered, featuring the world's endangered and protected species; British, featuring endangered, protected and common species; and The DEFRA-CITES Pilot Project, to aid the identification of traded corals.
DNA Interactive allows professors to register free to join the myDNAi online teaching community and access features such as personalized web pages, teacher guides with student activities, and the new Lesson Builder tool.
The Genome News Network produces a lively and trusted online magazine that covers important developments in genomics research around the world, with coverage focused on stories about genomics and human medicine, as well as the ways in which scientists are using genomics to find biological solutions to energy needs and environmental problems.
Penn Center for Bioethics is a leader in bioethics research and its deployment in the ethical, efficient, and compassionate practice of the life sciences and medicine.
The Virtual Trangenic Fly Lab will familiarize researchers with the science and techniques used to make transgenic flies. Transgenic organisms, which contain DNA that is inserted experimentally, are used to study many biological processes. In this lab, researchers will create a transgenic fly to study circadian rhythms. The fly glows only when a certain gene involved in circadian rhythms is activated.
Chemistry
The Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre is dedicated to the advancement of chemistry and crystallography for the public benefit through providing high-quality information services and software. NOTE: Slow to load.
The Inorganic Crystal Structure Database contains records of all inorganic crystal structures, with atomic coordinates, published since 1913. Metals and intermetallic compounds will be incorporated in the future. The data base contains 76,480 entries as of April 2004. It is updated twice a year, with each update comprising about 2000 new records.NOTE: Slow to load.
Earth Science
American Mineralogist Crystal Structure Database is an interface to a crystal structure database that includes every structure published in The American Mineralogist, The Canadian Mineralogist, and The European Journal of Mineralogy. The database is maintained under the care of the Mineralogical Society of America and the Mineralogical Association of Canada, and financed by the National Science Foundation.
GeoWeb's Digital Earth provides an open, global, and scalable infrastructure for rapidly discovering information on the Internet associated with a specific latitude/longitude location. XML-based metadata records are distributed across the GeoWeb using the existing Domain Name System (DNS).
SIMBAD is an astronomical database that provides basic data, cross-identifications and bibliography for astronomical objects outside the solar system. It can be queried by object name, coordinates, other criteria (filters), and lists of objects, and links to some other on-line services are also provided.
Wind Energy Resource Atlas of the United States estimates wind energy resource for the United States and its territories, and indicates general areas where a high wind resource may exist. This information is valuable to wind energy developers and potential wind energy users because it allows them to choose a general area of estimated high wind resource for more detailed examination.

History
The Ewell Sale Stewart Library of the Academy of Natural Sciences houses many rare, beautiful, and important works on the natural sciences, books that most people will never see in their lifetimes. These books were published over the last five centuries, and document the discovery of plant and animal species by early explorers as they traveled the world. By publishing the pages from these books digitally and providing access on the web, the Library hopes to share, with scientists, scholars, and the public, these early works.
The Race for DNA: A Documentary History narrates the breathless details of the pursuit of the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA. Scattered throughout the project are images of a number of very important and extremely rare items, all of which are held within The Valley Library's Ava Helen and Linus Pauling Papers, and many of which have not been previously displayed. Also featured are two original documents hitherto unknown to scholars interested in this period. It is expected that this website will serve as a primary reference point for individuals interested in the history of DNA -- both researchers and lay people alike.
