The Department of Mass Communication offers a broad-based liberal arts education, and prepares students for careers in the communication industry and for life. The faculty believes it is important for students to develop professional skills and values they need for successful careers in mass-media-related fields, while acquiring a base of general knowledge and developing critical thinking skills that will serve them well in life.

The department allows students to pursue their own specialty while insuring that they develop professionally and receive a broad-based education.

Faculty members work to insure that skills courses reflect current industry standards. Students are strongly encouraged to set up internships and acquire professional experience in traditional course work through service-learning projects, practicums and projects involving media or public relations organizations.

MACO students can choose from 3 specialties: Broadcast Journalism, Print Journalism, or Public Relations.
