Dr. Jim Cater
Assistant Professor of Management
Dr. Jim Cater spent 18 years managing a business in south Florida that had been passed down in his family for three generations. Therefore, researching the leadership of successors in family businesses was an obvious choice for his dissertation at Louisiana State University. Through his research, Cater got to know the owners/managers of six family businesses in the Baton Rouge area.
“This subject is very important to me because of my own experience,” Cater says. “I believe the project was interesting and has many practical applications as well.”
Cater joined the Nicholls State University faculty after completing his dissertation in 2006. He says he has been pleasantly surprised by the kindness and helpfulness of the faculty and staff at Nicholls.
“As far as my teaching goes, I am constantly trying to learn new ways to connect with the students and to make the classes relevant, interesting and enjoyable,” Cater says.
Cater dedicates his spare time to his wife and three daughters. Beyond that, he enjoys playing tennis, which he has done since the age of nine, and attending church and Bible studies.
