Dr. Ken Chadwick, Head
Associate Professor of Management and Head of the Department of Management and Marketing
Concerned about passing one of Dr. Ken Chadwick’s business courses? You may be surprised to find out that he was at one time too.
As an undergraduate student at Nicholls State University, Chadwick was in a minor automobile accident in the parking lot near Powell Hall. The student who hit his vehicle was the son of his business professor. Since the other student was at fault, the professor’s insurance company had to pay for Chadwick’s car repairs.
“For months I was concerned that there was no way I was going to pass this professor’s course,” Chadwick says. “Of course the professor never held the accident against me.”
Chadwick often smiles when he thinks about this incident while driving through the parking lot.
“An added bit of irony to the story is that the course I was so concerned about is now one I teach here at Nicholls on a regular basis,” Chadwick says.
Chadwick taught at Louisiana Tech University and Louisiana State University in Shreveport before returning to Nicholls in 2000. He had taught previously at Nicholls from 1990-1991. Since his return, Chadwick developed the MNGT 485 course, New Venture Creation, which addresses entrepreneurship issues. He also implemented the use of the Business Strategy Simulation Game into the BSAD 490, Business Policy, capstone course.
In 2004, Chadwick and three other researchers had an article published in the Academy of Management Journal, one of the premier journals of his field. The article examined the effects of diversity and strategic orientation on the financial performance of banks.
“This was truly an involved and sometimes frustrating endeavor,” Chadwick says. “However, the finished product is certainly one I am extremely proud of.”
Chadwick says the student interaction is what he likes most about teaching at his alma mater.
“The students always make each semester interesting and different from the previous one,” he says. “Without the diversity of students and their differing opinions, experiences and ideas, I believe my job would be much less enjoyable.”
In his spare time, Chadwick enjoys hunting and fishing with his son, Hayden.
