Family and consumer science students may expect to discuss family role conflicts in their courses. But should business students be concerned with such topics? Dr. Sonya Premeaux certainly thinks so, especially if you’re a management student. Do you believe employees never bring their family problems to work, and vice versa?

Premeaux has extensively researched work-family and family-work conflict. Work-family conflict occurs when an individual’s participation in the work role interferes with participation in the family role. Family-work conflict is the opposite—when participation in the family role interferes with work.

While balancing a family and career is a challenge, it’s definitely one that Premeaux herself has undertaken well. While rearing two children, Premeaux taught at McNeese State University and earned her Ph.D. degree from Louisiana State University. After teaching at McNeese State for 12 years and Arkansas State University for two years, Premeaux accepted a position as assistant professor of management at Nicholls State University.

Two years later, in 2005, Premeaux was promoted to associate dean for the College of Business Administration and in 2006 was promoted to associate professor. Since her start at Nicholls, Premeaux initiated the College’s Study Abroad program in Costa Rica as well as the annual business etiquette dinner.

Premeaux says students will not find a more caring faculty anywhere but the Nicholls College of Business Administration.

“The faculty are the most collegial and cooperative of any with which I have been involved,” she says. “I want my students to know that I’m willing to work with any student who is willing to work for what they want and will go that extra mile to get there.”

In her spare time, Premeaux enjoys reading, spending time with her children and being outdoors.
