Nicholls State University Announces Homecoming Events

THIBODAUX – Nicholls State University has a full slate of events for Homecoming 2007, announced Debbie Raziano, director of Alumni Affairs and chair of the Nicholls Homecoming Committee. Events with the theme “Colonels on the High Seas” are scheduled to take place from Monday, Oct. 15, to Saturday, Oct. 20, and include:

  • Monday, Oct. 15
    • Homecoming Week Kick Off. The community is encouraged to “Paint the Town Red” by displaying /Geaux Colonels/ signs and having store windows/doors painted in this year’s Homecoming theme, “Colonels on the High Seas.” /Geaux Colonels/ signs are available at local Chamber of Commerce offices or at the Nicholls Alumni House, 203 Audubon Ave., Thibodaux.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 16
    • At 3 p.m., the Student Programming Association will sponsor the annual pirogue races for students on Bayou Lafourche across from Elkins Hall on Louisiana Highway 1.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 17
    • A Car Decorating Contest, sponsored by the Student Government Association, is planned from 8 to 11 a.m. outside of the Student Union for all Nicholls students, administrators, faculty, staff and alumni with a valid university parking decal.
    • The SPA will sponsor “Colonels on the High Seas” in front of the Bollinger Memorial Student Union from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will include karaoke, games, contests and prizes before and after the pep rally.
    • A Homecoming pep rally will be conducted at noon in front of the Student Union. The Homecoming Court and Car Decorating Contest winners will be announced. In case of inclement weather, activities will move to the Student Union lobby.
  • Thursday, Oct. 18
    • The “Colonels Set Sail” Homecoming Parade will begin at 5 p.m. at John L. Guidry Stadium. The route then travels on Audubon Avenue to Menard Street, then Menard Street to St. Charles Street, St. Charles Street to Seventh Street, Seventh Street to Bayou Lane, Bayou Lane to Menard Street, Menard Street to Audubon Avenue and then Audubon Avenue to the Nicholls campus.
    •  Immediately following the parade, festivities will move to the field south of South Babington Hall for a bonfire, sponsored by the Nicholls Alumni Federation, and a pep rally with food, drinks and live entertainment, sponsored by SPA and the Residence Hall Association.
  • Friday, Oct. 19
    • The College of Business Administration Alumni Association will host a Homecoming Social at 5:30 p.m. in the College of Business Ponder Room and Courtyard on campus. For reservations, call the College of Business Administration at (985) 448-4171 by Friday, Oct. 12.
    • Residence Hall Reunion begins with an informal gathering at 7 p.m. (location TBA) Long, Meade and Millet-Zeringue residence halls are slated for demolition to make way for new student housing. Join former residence hall classmates to say good-bye to these dormitories before they are gone. For more information, call the Office of Alumni Affairs at (985) 448-4111.
    • From 8 to 10 p.m., the Bollinger Memorial Student Union Board will sponsor “Comedy Night – Open Mic” in the Student Union. Students, faculty, staff and alumni are invited to perform original poetry, music or stand up comedy.
    • Pre-Tailgating Celebration, sponsored by SGA, will follow “Comedy Night – Open Mic” and will continue until 2 a.m. This event will feature dancing, music, food and a cash bar and will take place outside of the Student Union.
  • Saturday, Oct. 20
    • The annual Homecoming Golf Tournament will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Bayou Country Club in Thibodaux. The tournament will feature 18 holes of golf in a four-person scramble format with a registration fee of $100 per golfer. The fee includes a gift, golf cart, green fee, coffee, donuts, refreshments and food on the course as well as two tickets to the Homecoming Buffet and Reception. The first place team will win a $240 gift certificate, and the second place team will win a $160 gift certificate. The tournament is open to male and female alumni and friends of the university. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. A maximum of 68 golfers may participate. Payment must be made in advance to hold a team spot. The registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 12.     • The annual Homecoming Mixed and Talented Tennis Tournament will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Nicholls Tennis Courts. The $15 per person registration fee includes a gift, food, refreshments and two tickets to the Homecoming Buffet and Reception. Awards will be presented to the first, second and third place winners. A maximum of 16 teams may participate. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Payment must be made in advance to hold a team spot. The registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 12.     • Join former residence hall classmates for a Residence Hall Reunion Brunch at 11 a.m. in the Vernon F. Galliano Hall cafeteria. For more information, call the Office of Alumni Affairs at (985) 448-4111.
    • Beginning at 1 p.m., former residence hall classmates will host a Residence Hall Reunion Tailgating party at the Residence Hall Alumni Tent in the John L. Guidry Stadium parking lot. For more information, call the Office of Alumni Affairs at (985) 448-4111.
    • The College of Education Alumni Association will host a reception at 1:30 p.m. in Polk Hall Lobby. Call the College of Education at (985) 448-4326 by Friday, Oct. 12, to RSVP.
    • From 4 to 5:30 p.m., the Nicholls Alumni Federation will celebrate Homecoming with a buffet reception and pep rally in the Nicholls Quadrangle. The event will feature the presentation of awards for the golf and tennis tournaments and the introduction of the Homecoming Court. The celebration will also include introduction of the outstanding alumnus/alumna for each college. The Nicholls Bookstore will have a booth offering a special Alumni Homecoming Discount. Dues-paying alumni will receive two free tickets to the Homecoming Buffet and Reception. Tickets are $10 per person for others and can be purchased until Friday, Oct. 12, by calling (985) 448-4111. In case of inclement weather, activities will move to the Student Union lobby.
    •  The Pride of Nicholls Marching Band and Cheerleaders will host a pep rally during the Homecoming Buffet and Reception at 5:15 p.m. in the Nicholls Quadrangle. At 6 p.m., guests can follow the band to Guidry Stadium for the football game kickoff.
    • Former residence hall classmates are invited to gather in front of Long Hall for a Residence Hall Reunion Group Photo at 5:45 p.m. For more information, call the Office of Alumni Affairs at (985) 448-4111.
    • Kickoff for the 2007 Homecoming Colonel football game against the Cowboys of McNeese State University will be at 6 p.m. in John L. Guidry Stadium. The Homecoming King and Queen will be announced at half-time, followed by a fireworks display sponsored by the Nicholls Alumni Federation, SGA and SPA. Football game tickets are $15 per person. The 2007 Homecoming T-shirts will be dark gray and feature the “Colonels on the High Seas” Homecoming theme logo on the back. The Office of Alumni Affairs is taking shirt orders until Wednesday, Oct. 3. Short sleeve shirts are $10, and long sleeve shirts are $15 for small, medium, large and extra large sizes. Oversized shirts in 2XL and 3XL are available at an additional cost.
